This afternoon, the core contributor folks added a field to Drupal.org that lets you list your Drupal mentors on your profile.
It seems like one way of uncovering how people become involved with Drupal, and a pretty neat one at that. If you're interested in sharing that information with the community, you'll find it by following the link "Logged in as [your username]", clicking Edit, and clicking Drupal on the green bar. I imagine somewhere down the road, there will be some great data visualizations.

A tandem metric that would be
A tandem metric that would be really insightful (and potentially really helpful) is to know which users, especially new ones, don't have mentors. This way we could formulate a strategy for "hooking them up" with a mentor, if they're interested.
Another idea that we could toss around is having a checkbox field on profiles for "I'm a mentor" or "I'm interested in mentoring."
