I'm a webdesigner converted to Drupal since few years now and I'm moving to Perth in few month from now. I'm looking at the local Drupal activity and I have to admit... it doesn't look very active.
So maybe I'm not looking at the right place, or maybe I'm right, but either way, I think that the best way to gain awareness and activity is by communication, and education. I'm whiling to share my knowledge and and ideas with anyone who would be interested into learning Drupal at Perth. The end goal would be to create some drupal meetup, and maybe down the road have a DrupalCamp Perth, but as a start, regrouping the community would be really awesome.
This is something I'm use to here in Vancouver where every month the local drupalers meet to discuss about Drupal, and eventually share a beer afterword. I think that this is a great way to make the community stronger and healthier, and hope to have something similar going in Perth, where I'm sure there's a great potential for Drupal.
Feel free to bounce on the idea, and add your two cents, or even better, tell me I'm too late and that there is already something similar going on. If so, I can't wait to join the Perth Drupal group !

I was a bit worried that this discussion would remain empty of comments, so am very happy to see that my call go some echoes :)
Can't wait to be there and get the community going ! We could start wit simple session like "Installing drupal", "essential module", "Views / CCK", "Theme start" etc... The more we get people aware of how simple Drupal can be, the more we will be able to have them share their own discovery and participate to these meetups.

For the meet-ups, we can rely on this website as it provides all the necessary tools for this kind of event.

You can add an Event, that people can subscribe too, with date and locations.
I guess that the first challenge will be to find a location, and as I'm not in Perth yet, I won't be much help, but if possible, something central and easy to access with public transportation would be nice. Downtown or somewhere along the Transperth.

I'd be up to talk about theming. I've been looking at Drupal 7 fairly closely, and could prepare something for January. I maintain the theme starter Basic ( http://drupal.org/project/basic ) and it is a great way to stay up to date with the latest improvements. By this time Drupal 7 should be more stable so it'll be the perfect way to start using it.

My employer (itomic) have a small boardroom with PC & LCD in West Perth (very close to City West train station) we can probably use after office hours (I still gotta get permission of course). It only fits about 6 people, so it might only be fine for the first few meetups, but at least its a start.

By the way, what's the general consensus. Are people more keen to meet during the day or after work. Maybe as a first informal meet a pub might also work - and a cooling ale never goes astray

Not sure if any of you have been to Belguim Beer Cafe before, but it might be best to sit on the tables/chairs at the front, or around the side, rather then inside as it might be a bit noisy. Can work it out then I guess.
