CADUG location for November? Locations going forward...

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

First, a quick update on CADUG. We met at the Palantir.net offices on Tuesday the 30th of October. There were approx: 20 attendees and we covered a variety of topics. Here is a listing from memory:

  • pizza metro's potoato/rosemary pizza is somewhat mindblowing
  • becw had a useful and fun presentation/rant on GIT best practices
  • wamilton talked about deploying Drupal environments using Chef
  • we talked about ubercart in d6, the history of drupal commerce, and small budget ecommerce solutions that are NOT ubercart in D6
  • a lot about architecture, particularly with relation to Panels and OG mashups that crell and stevector have been doing
  • scheduling, calendars and Dates in PHP/MySQL and Drupal - best practices for storing dates etc - crell had a LOT to say about this topic!
  • the value of writing Views plugins over using the "evil" PHP validator
  • a few lesser known modules were namedropped, http://drupal.org/project/date_repeat_instance comes to mind.
  • the merits of building monolithic or "godlike" content type w/ 50+ fields for all use cases was discussed - might work for smaller sites. definitely makes content editing easier for some users. there are quite a few potential performance issues with this.

My apologies if I'm forgetting anything - we don't do a particularly good job taking notes. In order to fully experience a CADUG meetup you truly must attend!

--- so the next order of business is: location, location, location...

The Palantiri were more than happy to host and offered to do so in November upon approval of management. I still have 'Promet' set as the location due to meetup.com default requirements, but this will likely change.

It is a goal of ours to keep CADUG nomadic. Promet were great hosts for the first 3 meetups. We anticipate being at Palantir in November and possibly January as well. Note: Last Tuesday in December is the 25th, so there will be no CADUG in December.

If you have the ability to host a CADUG meetup, please let us know. We are looking for venues that can host 20-30 people. It seems the group grows by about 3-5 new members each meetup. If this continues, we may need to find a larger more-permanent space. We shall see about that, but in the meantime, please chime in here if you or your company/organization are capable and interested in hosting one of CADUG's meetups!

Dates & Views Plugins

I really wish we could have been there, sounds like a great meetup. I'm particularly interested in the date topic-best practices and the Views plugin. Anyone have other sources like links, blog posts, etc. that could point me in the right direction? Larry, anything on Palantir's site?
