I was hoping to get some people input on the following plans I have for my Aegir install.
I have one server which is the master Aegir server with currently 4 octopus instances installed. Our main site sits on one of these and we have now decided it would be nice if there was a dedicated database server.
Is it possible and if so does anyone have any links to instructions to split/move the octopus instances to other servers. Or more importantly for me to setup a server which is just a database server.
The main reasons for this is to reduce the load on the web server and to allow us to have a single database server for aegir and other applications. Can we even use the database server for other stuff other than Aegir? Would that cause issues?
Best regards
Niall

Not easy
If you have used default install settings, all sites expect db server available on localhost, all grants are for localhost etc. Migrating to standalone db server is still possible, but there are a few steps, depending on the migration mode - entire instance, db server only etc. You can find helpful scripts used to migrate entire instance to a different IP: http://drupal.org/node/1845826 - it doesn't cover migrating db server alone, because then you will need to fix all grants for all sites, re-verify all sites to re-create their settings.php with correct credentials, open port 3306 or whitelist db server IP on the firewall etc.
Yes, you can host any other PHP app on the same server - see at Chive as an obvious example and check this: http://drupal.org/node/1416798#comment-5514218
