I am working on a community site which I hope will grow tremendously. I am not a systems person and would prefer not to have to move to different servers as the site grows. I know that this may mean going overboard in the early days.
Does anyone have a method for determining how much server a site needs? Concurrent visitors? Any specific issues to be aware of?
Thanks

Logged in users are several times more server-intensive than anonymous, up to many times depending on your config.
Something like RackSpace / SliceHost would be pretty easy to upgrade later. If you're unsure of requirements I'd mostly just avoid locking yourself into any particular physical server.

Thank you for the reply. The site will be very much oriented toward user created content. People would need to be registered to post content. Knowing who is posting will be important as it is a single industry niche.
I looked at Slicehost, but have no concept of what a 256GB slice can do. I may need to study up on Linux servers.

Have you tried enabling any performance logging on the site? That can tell you how much memory each page takes on average. That can help guide you in your choice of memory on the server.
Past that point my knowledge is lacking :)
Good idea, I will keep that
Good idea, I will keep that in mind. The site is in early development. Hosting is one of the issues that feeds my paranoia.
