Just wondering what the general thoughts are about these modules. The Distro that brought me to Drupal in the first place has panels installed on the D7 alpha and I would like to become familiar with it. I have a test site that would be a great playground for this, but seems cumbersome out of the box.
Thoughts?

I use panels on most sites I build. I find that it makes creating the home page and all of the internal landing pages easy.
I'm working on a club website right now and there are several pages that look different depending on whether the visitor is anonymous, authenticated or a club member. Panels makes this easy to do.
There's a distro -- Spark? not sure -- that is built entirely with panels, including giving the panels in place editor to the content creators. I'm not comfortable with that (but most of my sites are for people who are not computer savvy), but I was quite impressed with the demo of it I saw at BADCamp.

Panels and friends
Panels can be an awesome layout tool but it is very complex and most of the frankensites I've worked with really messed up using Panels. I'm starting to shy away from Panels and will be trying out only using Display Suite with Context along with additional theme regions if necessary .
That said there are times when Panels really makes sense like when there are different layouts per user or lots if very different and complex layouts or you want to handle non-entity pages or need the Panels Everywhere functionality.
Note: There is a nice integration between Panels and DS where you can use Panel layouts in DS.
