Weber vs. Instructional Designer

kreynen's picture

Why invent a term like "weber" when their is a widely accepted term for that role? Director is also a confusing term. If that is the person who administers the system, why not call them a systems administrator. Again, a widely accepted term for someone in this role.

Weber is a well known brand

Weber is a well known brand of BBQ (at least here in Australia) and one of our graphic designers is already bristling at being a purveyor of charcoaled meat products.

Weber grills are popular in

Weber grills are popular in the states too. We even have Weber restaurants. I've never eaten at one, but I assume they cook the food on Weber grills.

Roles I have in cis connector

Roles I have in cis connector package for compare/ contrast:

instructor
student
teaching assistant
past student
staff
administrator
guest

all people "on staff" have semi-administrative access to act on the course. This bundles up learning designers / instructional designers with copy editing and other editor / supplemental staff roles. Past student is incase you want to retain a certain level of access post-course completion. guest is to provide a way of mirroring some of the edge-case user roles provided by LMSs / LTI specs.

Need some new names!

Hmm, I doubt there are unambiguous names. However, I'm not wedded any set of names.

Are author, instructor, and student alright?

Weber

I use Weber because it's funny. OK, maybe just to me. Here's what I wrote, long ago:

---- CUT SCREEN HERE ----

A Weber is someone who makes Web sites.

During the middle ages in Europe, people where often named for their jobs.

If John was a blacksmith, he’d be called John Smith.

If John made barrels, he’d be called John Cooper (a cooper is someone who makes barrels).

If John made Web sites, he’d be called John Weber.

So, if your last name is Weber, there’s a good chance that one of your ancestors made Web sites during the middle ages.

---- CUT SCREEN HERE ----

HA HA! Ha?

Weber is a brand of BBQ equipment in the US, too. That just makes it funnier!! Except to that designer. Must have a stump up his arse. What a whinger. Isn't a pom, is he?

What's a better name? Site builder?

Director

The director is not a Drupal admin - I don't have a Drupal admin on the list (the weber/site builder is the closest function).

The director is someone who's in charge of the learning project. Defining the audience, setting learning outcomes, like that. It's a business function, not a tech one.

What's a better name? Lead author?

Evaluator

Might not be an actual teaching assistant. Could be in another hemisphere, even.

Would grader be better? I use that sometimes.
