QR codes for event check-in

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Any ideas for generating QR codes and using them to check-in attendees in Drupal? Unfortunately, this will be in 6.x.

We started to plan a similar project for a large event. We never had to move forward with the project, but here was our 2 initial plans, neither actually used or tested:

Third party

  • Use a third party ticket provider, that has it's own online registration and tickets. (Cost involved)
  • Use supplied hardware to scan and register through them.
  • Simple iframe to integrate with current site.

Mostly Drupal

  • Use one of the QR code modules (looked at dot2code)
  • Use Drupal to handle the registration and creation of the event ticket QR code (node id)
  • QR reader was the issue, we looked into a single reader that could store a scan to a database (rental), and then we ran a simple upload, and created a cron Job (Something beyond me) to scan the database and generate new nodes with a node reference of QR(node id)

This is all purely

This is all purely speculation, I've never done anything of this sort, but couldn't you just fire a rule upon entering that page that the QR code leads to that would register a check-in.
