Topic I am interested in: "Using GIT for Website...

frederickjh's picture

Hi!

I have a topic that I am interested in. In the last few months someone gave a talk on GIT but this seemed to focus more on how to use GIT for Drupal development.

I see that there are now website hosting services that use GIT to update your website. See http://www.freistilbox.com/features/ and then scroll down to the section titled: "freistilbox keeps your development process simple.

It is not clear to me if this is only for development or also for updating modules and core. I would be interested in hearing someone talk about how to use GIT this way and maybe also how this compares to using drush to manage/develop a site.

God Bless!

Frederick

Past - Advanced logging the Drupal way

miro_dietiker's picture

I guess most people don't understand the topic "Past" suggested by Jos / Sascha Grossenbacher yet.

We recently have released the module Past:
http://drupal.org/project/past

It's an awesome module for complex development projects. If you feel like the watchdog log is limiting your productivity or doesn't contain the relevant information. Finally it helps you doing quality assurance at a higher level and finding the bugs faster.

Learn about how proper logging with advanced tools can safe your life. .-)

Additionally we're still missing a introductional topic for drupal newcomers this time. If you have a good topic, please suggest.

Two proposals for the intro:

  • D7/D8 short comparison (tutorial videos, guided screenshot tour and/or a live walk-through).
  • CRISplay is a CRUD (Create, Retrieve, Update, Delete) display module for common users and simple data (two custom tables, at the moment). I developed it at the end of last year for a Swiss politician — it is supposed to improve the Swiss democratic process (original description: "The True Democracy web application offers public transparency of the signature collection process during Swiss referendums"). Its foundational technical idea cannot be compared with the concept of Drupal's modular/flexible 'content types/fields/entities', nor can it be compared to contrib modules like Webform or Views in combination with VBO.
There's a link to the True Democracy App (including a brief desciption in German; only the retrieval of data is, due to permission settings, possible) on the homepage of my site.
Something we discussed lively during the DUG-OX (Oxford) meeting in February: one could develop CRISplay further into something more powerful — the backend would, then, look like a user-friendly Phpmyadmin where users could click&drag&drop table fields/columns into their required MODEL, create field dependencies, VIEW the whole output and CONTROL the displayed data via CRUD functionality. The demand from the user side does exist, as it seems! Many people are used to using MS Access and demand respectively expect similar tools on the Web!!! But there's nothing like that in the Web, a pity. Alone, I guess it would be quite a chunk of work, even with the basic foundation which already exists. Crowdfunding?
