we hate crazy as well - their servers are so old!
we have a full cpanel hosted solution that's drupal friendly on our servers int he gold coast. the data centre very drupal friendly with techs who understand that and can build server clusters and individual vps solutions that you would be able to migrate to if necessary if our server got too small for you. we have successfully done this with other sites including the now defunct qldfloods.org
we offer a full service - with people who you can talk to whenever you need to 24/7 who know what they are doing (not a tieerd support desk with email queues and 1300 ph numbers) We have been doing this for our clients for 15 years and are happy to talk
Cheers

there are the obvious choices

chaloum's picture

There are the obvious choices such as AQUIA but have a look at crucial.com.au they are new but seem to have a good product.

BTW what issues did you have with Crazy? I've got a few clients who host on Crazy and generally dont have any issues.

Take a look at Quadra and Anchor

inteja's picture

I've found Quadra to be pretty good. Shared hosting starting at around $10 / month. http://www.quadrahosting.com.au

Anchor are second-to-none, but more expensive. Highly recommended though. They were a DrupalCon Sydney sponsor, so well worth supporting. http://www.anchor.com.au/

For ultimate control Linode is awesome and great value, but no Australian datacentre as yet (closest are Tokyo and Fremont, CA). http://www.linode.com

@inteja I've got a client on

@inteja

I've got a client on Quadra and out of interest can you install Drush and rsync. I ask this as we havent been able to achieve this on the Quadra system and we have never received a response to the question from quadra.

EDMEDiA Australia

Haven't tried drush on Quadra

inteja's picture

chaloum, I haven't tried to get drush installed on my quadra hosting account, but I use it extensively on my (newer) Linode account. With Quadra I recall I had to jump through a few hoops (fax a signed agreement) before I could even get shell access, but that may have changed in recent years.

Quadra support is usually rapid and helpful, so I'm surprised you've received no response from them regarding the possibility of getting drush installed.

I am using Linode as well now because I have full root access and can do what I like (e.g. install drush + Aegir etc). Aegir isn't compatible with other cpanel type software that many shared hosts run, which I found a major limiting factor.

Web Prophets

I suggest speaking to Jim at Web Prophets in Melbourne - Jim is a guru of hosting (and an all round nice guy) and they have experience building / hosting Drupal sites.

crazy

spyjournal's picture

edmedia - wait until you try and cpanel move a large site off crazy to another server - you will tear your hair out!

Thanks for your responses...

benjmarr's picture

Thanks for your responses... had a look at quadra and it seems reasonably priced. Do you know the php mem limit for quadra?

Crucial also has some fairly solid offerings...

If the site goes well they will have to look at upgrading to something more dedicated but for the meantime its ok.

Problem with crazy is speed aswell as they keep blocking ports on us in turn preventing us from sending mail.

Sorry I don't know the Quadra

inteja's picture

Sorry I don't know the Quadra PHP mem limit. If there is one, I've never hit it. I usually add a local php.ini override or Drupal settings.php PHP override for such things and it's never been an issue with Quadra to the best of my knowledge (at least for my use cases).

Quadra and Crucial

totocol's picture

I've also had a good experience with shared hosting with Quadra and crucial has been good so far for VPS

Mandrill for email

tripper54's picture

Re your problem with port blocking preventing you from sending email, I highly recommend checking out mandrill for handling all outgoing email from drupal. http://www.drupal.org/project/mandrill

Basically all emails are sent via an API call to the mandrill mail system (the transactional email arm of webchimp).

I use it for all clients now unless there's a well defined reason not to. It's free if you're sending less than 12,000 emails a month, great reporting, no problems with blacklists etc. It also means you can send emails from your local dev with zero hassle.

Hi Tripper, Thanks for

benjmarr's picture

Hi Tripper,

Thanks for suggestion Mandrill... Looks like it will do the job nicely. This was the only part of the site that wasn't consistant and reliable. Will report back once we have tested it out.

@spyjournal I move and

chaloum's picture

@spyjournal

I move and migrate sites all the time from crazy to dev and testing and vice versa and have no issues. I dont use Cpanel as it sux and I dont use the web hosts email services (no matter which host you use you will run into issues with email coming directly from a web host) instead I use other 3rd party email services.

Without a doubt Crazy is an elemental service but for what it is, it's fine.

Aust based VPS

geoff's picture

I have been looking at VPS Blocks and have talked to the techies there and they look promising

http://www.vpsblocks.com.au

They are based in Cranbourne, VIC and they use SSD for their disks for speed.

I have not used them yet - no time - but intend to try them out.

Also have a VPS server with BitCloud for several years now

http://www.bitcloud.com.au/

They are based in Sydney. I could not get BOA running with them, but have a cPanel VPS that is very fast and stable.

I like the idea you can alter the CPU, Disk and RAM separately as needed - whereas disk and CPU are normally locked into plans that go up together.

Just food for thought

VPS Blocks looks like a very

VPS Blocks looks like a very solid service with room to grow. Will hopefully get the chance to test it out on a project coming up soon.

Thanks all for your help... have decided to try crucial cloud.

Would love managed Aegir

PI_Ron's picture

Would love to see Australian based managed Aegir hosting like Omega8.cc

All though, it would need to be especially great to steer away from Omega8. Their speed, knowledge & customer service is great.

Media Fortress

Netflow's picture

Media Fortress (http://www.mediafortress.com.au/web-hosting.php) for Australia Wide and USA shared hosting. If you're looking for lower cost.

I've also been using http://www.connectivityit.com.au/products/co-location/ for co location and if you're in Melbourne a pretty good choice. They're faster than http://micron21.com/ and I prefer their support.

Site5

mojolama's picture

I've been really happy with Site5 shared hosting in the US. They provide Drush out of the box. My php memory_limit is currently 256MB. Commerce Kickstart performs well.

My sites broke during their php 5.2 -> 5.3 upgrade, but they were very responsive via chat.

Web24.com.au

peterx's picture

The original question was about shared hosting with VPS as an option. Web24 handle that and offer alternatives including cloud hosting.

Web 24 offer shared, VPS, co-location, dedicated, cloud, with the choice of every major operating system plus raw or with WHM/cPanel. I use their Linux VPS for many sites. Good service. They also answer how-to questions that are not directly related to the service they provide. They answer all tickets in Australian time, no waiting for overnight answers.

For VPS, you get Parallels as the top level of control including rebooting the VPS if the VPS locks up. They monitor and fix the hardware plus apply security updates at the OS/WHM/cpanel level. You control the PHP/Apache/MySQL/whatever.

I am looking at moving from a WHM VPS to a raw Linux VPS with Webmin when Webmin is a little more stable. Web24 appear to be the lowest cost provider in that combination based on level of service, space, etc. I have not looked at how their cloud hosting compares.

They are in one of the biggest best backed up Melbourne data centres. Telstra cable broadband connects to the Internet in Melbourne, giving me almost instant response times. FTP downloads are almost local speeds. FTP uploads can slow down at times. No other complaint.

no D7 on web24 shared hosting

skrael's picture

Web24 don't support D7 as their shared hosting is php 5.0.9 only which is why I am here trying to find alternatives.

They suggest VPS but it frightens me a bit as a noob. Maybe it isn't so bad but I really dont need to be dropped in the sh#t when something goes wrong because "vps is your responsibility" since I don't really have the technical background to fix it.

I have 5 D6 sites. All smallish with not massive bandwidth. With web24s freeTLD domain offer it is pretty simple and economical as well as scalable.

But one site needs a responsive theme so I need to upgrade to D7.

VPS isn't out of the question... I just don't know how tough it is first time round.

peterx's picture

@skrael, I use a VPS with cPanel because it is so easy to do everything. An example: http://drupal.org/node/348619

Web24 do not drop you in anything. You open a ticket and they help. They also answer questions about how to do stuff.

I work on VPSes hosted everywhere. Use a host in your time zone because they will have the most staff in their office when you are in your office.

WHM is the name of the top level of control in a cPanel VPS. WHM lets me choose the version of Apache and PHP. It currently offers 5.3, 5.3, and 5.4.

Web24 have been awesome so far

skrael's picture

So far I could not be happier with Web24. Sure, there has been the odd niggle, but their uptime (which I monitor independtly via Pingdom) has been great, their pricing is great and their service outstanding.

I'd hate to change.

Mostly I'm worried that going VPS is going to be an administrative headache. I can figure stuff out, but I am no IT expert. I am a "look it up and follow instructions" kind of guy, I don't actually really know what I am doing but somehow I always figure it out.

Still. Multisite definitely makes me interested. One Drupal backend to update? Hmmm. Definitely interested.

Maybe it is just fear of the unknown. In any event, moving to D7 is a must. I'll have to figure out what I do and don't need.

One of my sites is very well indexed and ranks highly in organic search results. This one in particular I am VERY careful of since I rely on it heavily. As such I usually treat it as a separate entity, with a dedicated IP.

Get redyhost cpanel plan,

ivrh's picture

Get redyhost cpanel plan, it's fast, drupal 7/8 support, drush support and automated drupal upgrades via softaculous (you have to install drupal via softaculous to get automated upgrades option), but it works great. You can even schedule daily backups and can restore it easily, via web interface.

redy.host

Low volume sites on Redyhost

peterx's picture

I have some sites to split off a VPS. Redyhost Drupal support looks good. Has anyone used them long term with them updating Drupal?

I have a couple of D7 sites to move and looked at the redyhost economy option. $6 month. The sites are low volume. If I move the sites to something like redyhost, I will do it so the site owners do not have to worry about security updates. Does that include them applying security updates to Drupal?

Hi @peterx you better off

ivrh's picture

Hi @peterx you better off submitting this request directly to them
