Other opcode caches
Besides XCache, there are two other free, currently maintained opcode caches.
APC
Actively maintained. Part of PECL, and hence maintained by PHP maintainers. Good performance. Supports the latest releases of PHP.
Here is a step by step procedure on installing APC on Debian/Ubuntu.
PHP eaccelerator
Actively maintained. Fork of the now obsolete Turck MMCache.
