Deleting a page (kind of)

Hi All

I would like to remove a page from my drupal site however instead of "Deleting" it completely I am just going to unpublished it so I can get it back in the future should it be needed.

The un-publishing of it from the site is fairly straight forward

1) Find page
2) Scroll to bottom
3) Click publishing options
4) un-tick publish

However someone mentioned that I would need to

"We'll have to delete the relevant search wizard entries (pretty simple)."

Of course its the "Pretty Simple" aspect of the above statement that im struggling with

Does this mean that I go to my website search bar type in the page address or title search & then go into each page that I can find with a link to the page I have just unpublished & remove it seems like an awful lot of work & I presume drupal has a simpler solution..

Apologies for the very basic questions but still getting my head around everything Drupal :-)

Thanks a million

You can Re-index the site

You can Re-index the site search which should remove any unpublished nodes

you're right to unpublish

I think you're right to unpublish rather than delete in most cases. Once you have cron running, it should re-index the site automatically.

You might want to think about what visitors see if they happen to have the page bookmarked and return, or if they follow a link from another website or search engine results page. If it was a popular page you might want to consider setting up a redirect to an alternative published page, rather than having them see the default 404 page.

Hope this helps,

Conor

I should add, you can unpublish a number of nodes at a time from the content listing page

Re-Index site & Custom 404

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly on this guys its much appreciated.

Just before i push the button on the Re-index i get this warning

"The search index is not cleared but systematically updated to reflect the new settings. Searching will continue to work but new content won't be indexed until all existing content has been re-indexed. This action cannot be undone."

Should I panic or just push it :-)

Also in relation to 404 is this something I can set up using "SEARCH 404 SETTINGS" at the moment the site has the "Use OR between keywords when searching" & "Use auto-detection of keywords when searching" checked in Advanced setting.
Would this be enough for the user who has the page bookmarked?

Or is there another way to create a custom page saying "This has been discontinued go to here for more info"

At the moment I think the "Use OR between keywords when searching" works as a 404 quite well but it doesnt provide too much info & it would be nice maybe have a more informative 404 for this page & general 404 pages

Thanks a million again for the help on this

test on dev

You should be fine. But I would obviously recommend you do all testing on a dev version of the site.

I think I had redirects more in mind, but search404 can be useful as a fallback. It can only work with the words in the path, so what will and won't work is down to the content in each case.
