Plans as in the focus of the group? As of now I plan to aim at discussing the different solutions for integrating Drupal and vBulletin.

I am currently working on a new solution, Drupaltin which should blow all other solutions out of the water. Discussion about the advantages and disadvantages between different products would be very useful information for all of us.

Two projects to review

My site uses vbDrupal, from www.vbdrupal.org. It technically is a fork of Drupal since the user.module and the bootstrap files are modified. But it is becoming a robust solution (though with a small following).

Also, there is a Drupalvb module, http://drupal.org/project/drupalvb, but it was not ever really finished.

I am interested in a well formed forum solution for Drupal, both personally and professionally as my company may soon branch out into more community focused sites and a robust forum is a requirement.

What are the features and depth of integration you are seeking in this module?

You can find a list of

You can find a list of features that are planned for implementation at the Drupaltin support forums: http://forums.theoverclocked.com/showthread.php?t=1952

I am working with the developer of Drupal vB to implement the features of his module with Drupaltin.

Some info about Drupaltin is available here: http://www.theoverclocked.com/drupaltin

Drupalvb module,

Drupalvb module, http://drupal.org/project/drupalvb works fine with me as it keep all drupal profiles and vb i just make a 301 redirection so i keep registration only by drupal, new users with be redirect when login to drupal to forum, its working with no hack no suffer.

A couple questions

Hi TheOverclocked,

I have a couple questions if you don't mind :)

1. Are there plans to make Drupaltin an "official" contributed module on the Drupal.org site? It would be handy to be able to reach it at www.drupal.org/modules/Drupaltin as well as use the tools, updates, and bug tracker there.

2. I am slightly confused in regards to the various projects. At first I thought Drupal vB and Drupaltin were the same project, but it appears I was wrong! It seems there are 3 efforts in the works/released:

A. Drupaltin. (http://www.theoverclocked.com/drupaltin) Drupal Core and vB are left unaltered; primary goal is to have a unified login/user system. A module works all the handshake magic for login as well as provides some blocks of code snippets to display most recent posts, private messages, etc.

B. Drupal vB. (http://drupal.org/project/drupalvb) Another Drupal module that does not hinder Drupal features and does not alter any Drupal code or Drupal tables. Comes with a number of blocks (Forum Activity--Recent threads/posts; Forum info; Forum Info--Unread posts/private message links, users online; Forum Admin--stats tracking, admin panel link). The module allows users logged into your site to be logged into the forum (and vice versa) and when registering on your site they also become registered on the forum.

C. vbDrupal. (www.vbdrupal.com) a fork in the Drupal code base and a new product. No longer compatible with Drupal updates; must rely on vbDrupal devs for secuirity updates and incorporating new features from Drupal into their product. Currently no Drupal 5.x version and a number of modules are incompatible with the project.

Is this correct?

3. It sounds like Drupaltin and Drupal vB are similar products with almost identical goals:

  • Do not alter core Drupal files
  • Unified user system (user account creation synchronization, global login, global password reset, etc)
  • vBulletin Forum block for Drupal (recent posts and threads, private messages, etc)

If this is the case, are both currently being worked on? Are there plans to merge the projects and "discontinue" one of them?

4. Why am I interested?

I need a forum, but...

  • I don't like the Drupal forums, specifically the lack of features and workflow.
  • I don't like some of the solutions offered, e.g. "packs" of modules that are not closely integrated, don't resolve some of the most glaring shortcomings, and require significant time to maintain.
  • The FUD Forum integration is light and FUD, while better than the Drupal forum, doesn't appear to be as well supported as the major.
  • The SMF integration is only for Drupal 5.x right now, is new, and the developer doesn't appear to speak English as a native language which makes support difficult.
  • phpBB has no module integration at all.
  • vBulletin appears to be where the action is, but...
  • vbDrupal is a fork and there is no way I am going to dump the core Drupal development path, and the awesome Drupal community, for a fork with an uncertain future. Ironically I had given my reservations about vbDrupal to a friend about a month ago and he decided to go ahead with it. Within a week he uninstalled vbDrupal.

As of right now I think going with a full forum solution, like vBulletin, is the best path for a forum due to features, workflow, support, and a cohesive / approachable (read: standard) forum experience. And one that doesn't alter Drupal, but shares user login/registration and basic forum info (new post blocks, etc) is exactly what I need. And it is gravy that a forum like vB actually fills in some of the minor voids in Drupal (like contacting all your registered users, private forums, etc).

So I am left deciding between Drupaltin and Drupal vB.

I really like your level of support and activity in this project (and hope it continues!) You also appear quite knowledgable in regards to serve/web technologies and have a good idea about what this sort of project requires as well as where to take it into the future. Your forum shows you are more than happy to hear suggestions and discuss them and to listen to user submitted inquiries, suggestions, and criticisms.

So I am leaning toward Drupaltin :) I feel it answers all my needs and concerns and allows growth for both my site and the forum. I have a few other questions, especially about Drupal and vB being on different servers (not a current situation for myself but one I had in the back of my head if the need ever arised due to CPU/Memory limitations on my box) but I will try to get to those in another post or even on your forum :)

Thank you for your time and effort on this project. I like what you have done and look forward to your project growing!

Now lets get it on Drupal.org/project/ ;)

DruBB as an option

Gman's picture

http://groups.drupal.org/drubb may grow into something you can use, maybe. Maybe by Drupal 6 as well. I believe if can finally get some heads and time around the drupal forums, they can be improved into a platform that is more to all of our likings.
