After a summer hiatus, the Drupal Users Group for Waterloo Region is back ...
For September, we have a group exercises, where group members will provide input to someone who wants to use Drupal to create a site.
The first site is for a local charity that has three drupal online communities. They want to decide if they should keep the communities in Drupal and do a refresh or if they should re-build in a easier/simpler/ better platform.
Some other areas they like to discuss:
- Single sign on to the three communities - is this possible?
- Recommendations for adding a gaming component
- Simplifying the community manager theme/layout
We will have time in the second half of the meeting to discuss another request for help as well, for someone who wants to use Drupal Commerce for a site, and has questions regarding that.
The person(s) asking for assistance should be prepared to give a 10 to 15 minute overview of the site, what is it about, what they are trying to do, what challenges they are facing, and why are they asking for assistance.

Another thing to consider before separating sites into separate sites, or coalescing them into one site, is future considerations.
I totally recommend against table sharing across sites, although it is a base Drupal feature, since it makes upgrades harder. It also forces your sites to all run off the same MySQL server. But this depends on the expected traffic. Similarly, using database prefixes to force more than one site into the same database should be avoided.
Using the bakery module, with all its quirks, is better for doing single signon rather than table sharing of users and sessions, since it does not force you to run the sites on the same machine. You may start on one machine, but you don't want to be restricted to that when the time comes to spin off sites to separate servers.
