DrupalCon vs. SuperHappyDrupalHouse

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

When I was recently down in the Bay Area, I connected with some Drupal folks and talked about planning for upcoming activities.

Since our last "con" was in North America, if we follow previous series, then the next one should be in Europe.

My personal current plans around this are to organize a DrupalCon around BarCamp Brussels / EuroOSCON 2006 in Brussels. Dries is presenting in Brussels, and Colin Brumelle just got word that his talk on "Music 2.0" has also been accepted.

The "cons" generally are a mix of developer and user work, and we've had lots of presentation-style content. Coding tends to be limited to (sometimes very successfull) hallway and hotel hacking. I think the timing and place of DrupalCon Brussels is probably a good one, but how do we make sure we get some fun hacking in?

Well, I'm going to suggest that BarCamp Brussels be the dedicated hack time around DrupalCon.

The other thing that Zack was quite excited about when I floated the idea was the potential for renting a house for a week in Portland around OSCON. This would absolutely be a chance to sit down and do hacking. Bring crazy ideas, bring developers, bring half finished modules. Not really a DrupalCamp, although training/learning would most definitely take place. I definitely don't have time to organize this Portland event, so some group of people will have to step up to handle this.

Other than that, it's pretty much time to start planning DrupalCon Brussels 2006. I will definitely be helping organize this, but will need some people on the ground to also step one...ones whose names don't begin with "Dries" and end in "Buytaert" :P

(oh yeah, then there's a Seattle DrupalCamp, too....)

Portland

I think the house in portland is a great idea.

The 'problem' with another conference is, that we've talked about all the stuff we want to implement to death at this point, and another conference is not going to be congruent to sitting down and actually getting everything
done, unless it's heavily developer focused and consists primarily of hacking sessions.

There's also the fact that the majority of people I really want to get into a room with and hack are all based in the U.S. (talking of course of the JonBob, JonVanDyk, Earl trifecta =P )

Whatever conference / dev house happens, I suppose I need to give a presentation of sorts on FAPI 2.0, and
the direction it's taking.

My $$$ will go to the coding camp

I completely agree that the people who are busting with ideas need to be relieved of conference duty.

I personally think that anyone who wants to code instead of confer should just get a hotel banquet room with wifi and skip the Drupalcon. We could try this approach in Brussels. We'll find the funding for the room, if we need it.

DrupalCons have their place, and are very important for all the reasons we've experienced at the past 3-5 of them.

And it's not true that all the good coders are in North America! Sheesh.

of course not

some of us are in south africa too =)

i jest. It's just the people that did cck / views are all in america =)
cck / views are the cornerstone of drupal TNG imo.

I would enjoy a drupal hacking session :)

hey adrian, remember when you were in vancouver and your powerbook died? What was it? Harddrive or videocard?

BarCamp only?

So, we could join forces and just say we are going to have unstructured "sessions" at BarCamp Brussels.

I, however, also have to think somewhat with a "marketing" hat on. The previous DrupalCons (esp. Vancouver) have been very good for getting new people into the community. Straight coding tends to not be very conducive to having new people join.

But, with joining forces with BarCamp, I think we can probably meet all needs. We can promote the event and get people to sign up for what they want to hear about -- I'm always happy to wave hands and present about less developer focused items.

To be clear: Zack or someone else needs to step up and organize if anything is to happen in Portland -- I do not have time for this. Looks like Bill F can help on the ground there.

Or we avoid BarCamp

If BarCamp Amsterdam was any indication, the atmosphere is too chaotic. I'd most favor a DrupalCon with dedicated coding rooms. That solves both problems. But if I have to choose between a pure DrupalCon or Barcamp, I'll rent a house with CHX and Adrian and go there instead =)

I think the conclusion should be more that DrupalCon's need dedicated coding rooms.

agreed

i have to agree that our next generation ideas are pretty well talked out and some coding is a good next step. i'm gonna scream if we talk about CCK again for half a day.

the vancouver drupalcon was outstanding in every way, but i just don't think thats whats needed now.

If you are going to rent a

If you are going to rent a house in Portland, I'll do what I can to help with the logistics. For those unfamiliar with the City of Roses, it boasts great coffee, great beer, and more free wireless than you know what to do with.

I'd be glad to talk with folks about organizing some of the details.

Cheers,

Bill

My name begins with Dries but doesn't end in Buytaert, so I guess I can help :-)

I'd be happy to help organize DrupalCon Brussels 2006.

A little problem

chx's picture

As happy as I am to go and code with Drupal folks, if you do it in the USA, I won't be there.

Let's get together in a house before EuroOSCON.

I am not particularly interested in spending days with talk, talk, talk. I will have very little free time this fall.

DrupalCon in Barcelona sometime 2007

robertgarrigos's picture

I was also having some talks with Bert B. and Dries B. about a next DrupalCon in Barcelona because there was an interest in having it. I'm very happy to have next drupalcon in Brussels (I might be there also) although I would like to have a chance to organize a DrupalCon in Barcelona sometime during 2007.
