Regional group distribution

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

With tons of help from glendac and some assistance from simplymenotu, we've created a Google map that plots where all of the local user groups are on groups.drupal.org, along with their size, as of last week sometime.

You can check it out here:

It's very cool to see how global our little community is. :)

Northeast Ohio is a bit out of place. :-)

Is there any way to include a legend, i.e., what the different colors represent in terms of group size? And does the application you and glendac used allow all the different groups to be sorted alphabetically? If not, no biggie, but I am curious as it's something I may someday want to use for my own OG-based web site. I'm also wondering if there will be required payments for maps through this app once they exit their beta phase. Have you heard anything?

Wanting to know & track group info & statistics are things that have been discussed and desired in the past:
- Encouraging the "Drupal users map on Frappr" folks to come here to Drupal Groups.
- Group activity data analysis.
- Sortable by # of group members.
- Top 25 Drupal groups ranked by # of members. By the way, these 25 all turned out to be "Working Groups" and not "Geographic Groups," so a map is not applicable, but you get the idea; someone could probably write some code to filter by some parameter such as the "top x" (the user would type in "25") and then have the resulting 25 groups plotted onto a map.

So, I applaud your efforts. If we could someday automate the plotting of groups onto a map instead of doing it manually the way y'all did (which I thank you and glendac very much for!), that would be something really nice for web sites that run OG!

But what's this I see - not a single Drupal group in Antarctica???!!! ;)

Build in Drupal?

Looks fanastic! Any reasons that this wasn't built using the Gmap and locations module?
