Hey folks!
I'm going to be volunteering for Drupalcon SF, and there's still a number of volunteer positions folks are looking to fill. If anyone is interested, let me know and forward you to the right people to get you hooked up.
Cheers!
Chris

Drupalcon SF
Chris,
I really want to go to Druplacon SF next year, but finances are tight. What is involved on volunteering?
Does volunteering alleviate some of the costs?
Trying to figure out how to pay for all it.
Thanks,
Antonio
Hey Antonio, Last year I know
Hey Antonio,
Last year I know one of our group was sponsored to go, so it's likely that there will be some opportunities there. Here's the beginnings of a thread about financial support:
http://sf2010.drupal.org/forum/22/financial-support
As far as expenses go, here's my budget:
$199 - Drupalcon
$20 / night x 5 nights = $100 for lodging at the local hostel
$300 - Ticket to SF (Alaska Airlines)
$200 - Food budget (hopefully will be able to cook breakfast at the hostel)
$899
If one wanted to cut it down to getting there on the day Drupalcon starts, and leaving the day it ends, the costs would go down by about $120, so $779.
In terms of volunteering, there are some different opportunities available now that probably wouldn't require that you actually attend Drupalcon, though it would be a shame if you didn't get to reap the benefits of your work in some way. There's a list of volunteer opportunities being put together at the moment, and I'll post back here when the list is complete.
It would be awesome to have you there, Antonio. Last year, our area was well-represented, it would be great to get even more people there this year.
I suppose it would be worthwhile to see if there would be any local sponsorship of Drupal attendees, but I'm not sure where that sponsorship would come from.

Sounds good
The hostel idea sounds good. Is that a Youth Hostel? How do you find out about it? Those are real good deals, a friend of mine went to Japan and stayed at a hostel in Tokyo for $24 a nite, not a bad deal since Tokyo is a very expensive city and so is SF.
I have relatives in Palo Alto and could stay with them, but would have to take the train from there to SF and it is over an hour ride.
I looked in the Southwest website and they have a $100 deal each way for those dates.
Thanks for the tips,
Antonio

For Drupalcon DC I stayed at a Hostel that I found here: http://www.hostelworld.com/
I'm heading to a meeting
I'm heading to a meeting right now with some people that might be interested in doing a partial sponsorship. I'll ask them about it.
Chris, where are you staying? That's a pretty sweet deal! There will be one or two people going with me, so we'd definitely want to look into that!

This is the link to the hostel: http://www.usahostels.com/rates.html?lang=10&h=4, and I was mistaken, it's $30 / night, not $20. They have 4-person dorms, so I'm hoping I can hook up with 3 other Drupalists and get a room together. That way, I at least know who the snorers are. ;)

I am game for sharing a room at the hostel
Chris,
Please provide the details and I will share a room with you. I do have an "anti-snoring" applicance so don't worry. :)
What do we have to do to ensure a shared room with people you know?
Also is membership required?
I need to do my airline reservations soon and buy my ticket.
Thanks,
Antonio
Me too!
Me too...I'd be up for that. I sleep pretty silently, so no worries there =P
Ditto on the questions from Antonio above.
Thanks!

Okay, cool, I'm planning on
Okay, cool, I'm planning on being there from the 18th-22nd. How about you guys?
I've gone ahead and booked a 4 person dorm room for that time, apparently that's the way to secure the same room for everyone. They don't charge until you get there, so if we get there around the same time, we can either pay separately, or you can reimburse me. No membership is required!
It sounds like a nice place, run by students. Here are some FAQs: http://www.usahostels.com/faqs.html?lang=10&h=4.
Here are directions from the hostel to the convention center (.7 mile walk): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=711+Post+Street+San+Francisco,+CA+94109&daddr=747+Howard+St,+San+Francisco,+CA+94103+(Moscone+Convention+Center)&hl=en&geocode=FcOXQAId9Ry0-CnnfSqNkYCFgDEkAIbbyY6PNQ%3BCYpWt-pYcgr4FbGIQAIdwkq0-CH9C8Sy0AmMTimxZCp9h4CFgDE4t-jNRQDQdg&mra=pe&mrcr=0&dirflg=w&sll=37.785658,-122.407672&sspn=0.028591,0.029397&ie=UTF8&z=16
Should be cool. I've pinged someone about the 4th space in the dorm, so don't offer it out just yet.
Antonio, would you mind posting the deal you found on tickets? Was the $100 each way a non-overnight trip with no additional fees?
This will be fun!

Chris, Check
Chris,
Check http://www.cheapflights.com/
I just took a quick look at a one way flight from Boise to SF, and the lowest price I saw was $80 on Delta. For a return flight, I saw a $67 flight, but that looked like it was a one-time deal. The rest sat at about $80.
I recommend waiting until after the 1st of the year to book your tickets. Before Christmas and New Years, prices skyrocket. Then, after the first of the year, they go back down. Jan 15 is when I'll start looking again.
For the room @ the Hostel, it sounds like I will have one person with me. If that other spot is booked up, I can grab another room. Do let me know though: I'd much prefer to have a room full of people I know =P
Thanks!

Hey Cameron, Okay, the fellow
Hey Cameron,
Okay, the fellow I was checking in on about the hostel won't be able to make it, so there's a slot available if you wanted to bring your associate. If you can commit to him and you coming, then we should be good to go.
Thanks!

Save me a spot
Chris,
Just want to make you can save a spot for me at the Hostel. I have set those dates aside. I am arriving on Saturday, but plan to stay with relatives on Palo Alto that nite.
Thanks,
Antonio

Drupalcon SF
Chris,
Checking about the Hostel reservations. Are we still confirmed for the Hostel? Waht days are we confirmed for?
I am making my ticket purchase with Southwest, they have a $90.00 special for Sat thru Thrusday, and it costs $75 more for Sunday traveling and might be worth it rather than an extra day which might cost more on lodging and food.
Please let me know. Also I still have not purchased my ticket for the event.
Thanks,
Antonio
