Nashville Drupal Meet and Greet

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Greetings fellow Drupal heads!

It looks like we are starting to see an increasing interest in having an official Nashville Meet and Greet so I am throwing some thoughts out there for everyone to mash-up.

Date

I have selected the 3 dates as prospects for gathering. They are random (within the constraints of my iCal dates) and are definitely subject to change. For those of you who know me, you know I am not one to plan something for tomorrow, since tomorrow is always already full, thus the reason for dates being picked 2-4 weeks out. Feel free to switch them up, suggest others or kick me to the curb and do a better job :)

Location

I live way out in the wilds of Middle TN adn I can offer up either my home or the facilities of where I am employed, but it would be a 45 min drive for anyone downtown or further west. If you know of a home or facility that would be available for 1-3 hours, please post to this thread.

Agenda

Post your thoughts about an agenda for the meeting. What would you like to discuss, explore or have someone give a presentation on. Drop your thoughts below.

Closing

Once we pick a date, I will be there. Regardless of whether anyone else shows. So if you are concerned about getting stood up, well, at least you will have my goofy company. I have sent out emails to several developers I know in the area to let them know to get there butts over here and join up. So hopefully we will see some new members.

Additionally, if you know anyone that is new to Drupal in the Nashville area, invite them in.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Nashville Drupal Meet and Greet

Thornysarus's picture

Date: I'm free most evenings except for Wednesdays as I have a standing meeting with Untitled Artist's Group in Nashville. Of course I could skip, but would prefer to not have to choose between the two. Pick a date. I'll be there.

Location: Untitled meets every week at Kazu in Cummings Station. Kazu is a cool place, convenient, great food and the atmosphere is conducive to conversation. Having it at a bar/resturant makes sense and probably would encourage more folks to come hang out and contribute than at someone's home. Most restaurants have a table in the back that they keep for such standing appointments. just my thoughts.

Agenda: I think a simple meet and greet at least initially would suffice. This would also allow us to gauge what everyone's experience and desire to learn is. Once that is determined, I think an agenda that would be beneficial to everyone would be easier to define.

Meet, greet, and EAT!

I'm situated downtown, and May 19th works best for me. Wednesdays are never going to be a good day for me to meet either (work + church). Sunday afternoons would normally be an OK option, but the 27th is already taken up for me.

Currently, Thursday and Friday evenings are most frequently open for me. Saturdays are pretty flexible, and perhaps an occasional Sunday afternoon.

Whenever we settle on a location, I would recommend a place that has free wifi access, since we will naturally want to see what everyone else is doing, and show off our own uses for Drupal. Or perhaps we should ban laptops on the first meeting and just generate some buzz and interest for the next meeting. Drupal is primarily a social tool, after all. Hotel restaurants might be good locations, combining social areas with wifi and food. I think many public libraries have meeting rooms too, and we can all fight over the MySQL and PHP books afterwards.

I'm not exactly a web developer, but I really appreciate the things that I have been able to do with Drupal. I am particularly interested in the workflow module and CCK. It amazes me how much of an application you can create just by using modules and not writing any code. I am a programmer at heart, though, and need to break down and really learn PHP and at least a few areas of the Drupal API.

Meanwhile, check out Drupal Dojo, and the amazing things they are doing as a group to overcome the obstacles of being scattered across the globe. I plan to write a HOWTO or something on the method I use to get their screencasts automatically, and the community benefits of having more people do that.

Just don't laugh at my beat up Win2K ThinkPad.

Date, time, location?

Has any progress been made on setting a date, time or location at this point? I am fine with any but for physically meeting would prefer something in the Metro area.

The agenda for the meeting seems to be literally "meet and greet." While face-to-face contact has its advantages, most of the info we would share-- hello, my name is Ken, I'm working with the Horton Group doing x,y, and z... would just as easily be shared in a thread here. And we seem to be less than ten people.

So what I'm suggesting is that we all write up quick introductions and share them in a thread here, so we would be a step ahead in a physical meeting.

What do people think of this?

Did the meet and greet ever happen?

tdave00's picture

I have been using drupal for 4-5 months now but I just ran across this page. I would love to meet some fellow drupal users in the area. If this "meet and greet" never happened can we try it again?

Feel free to contact me.

Little Freshness??

This post might need to be bumped down. It's sorta old and those dates have passed. Anyone interested in working together on some projects that involve drupal??

Greetings shaub123!!! Several of us recently met at the Nashville BarCamp this last weekend and I believe we will be meeting again in the not too distant future. Keep your ears pealed. I am hoping to get something together for the middle of September. Untill then feel free to post questions or suggestions for what we can do as a group to help your or forward the Drupal message.
