DrupalCamp Ottawa?

Fidelis's picture

I would like to help in organizing a DrupalCamp in Ottawa, preferably for the CivicSpace distribution, for everything except... the teaching (!) I just finished reading (twice) the Drupal Part of "Building Online Communities with Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress" by Douglass, Little and Smith; and I am enthusiastic about the range and depth of drupal possibilities.

I was initially interested in drupal for an association web site (currently at www.gov20.info), but now, I think it could even handle the portal requirements at my work place (a legal office in government).

So: I am willing and able to help for stuff like providing a suitable conference room, training amenities, etc.; but I obviously can't teach it. ;-)

DrupalCamp Toronto

It would be great if you want to help organize something in Ottawa.

However, there is the DrupalCamp Toronto event coming up in May, which I just added as an event here. Probably easy enough to make the trek down for the day if you want to get started quickly.

Thanks Boris,

I agree - for now I would prefer to go to Toronto.

I went to read the goals at BarCamp and I have two questions for you: do you think this event is appropriate for someone (I'm thinking of me) with no programming experience? I'm interested in using Drupal (and CivicSpace) to develop an online community; is this event a good one for me? I do not want to tweak Drupal and CivicSpace, I just want to know how to best use it to its full potential...

Also, at a camp like this, how much (if any) of the schedule / discussions would cover CivicSpace?

Thanks!!

patrick

Two separate camps

Boris Mann's picture

There is DrupalCamp on Friday (exclusively Drupal stuff) and BarCamp on Saturday/Sunday. There will be spillover of Drupal folks to the weekend BarCamp stuff, I'm sure.

So, for sure come out for Friday. The BarCamp stuff will be wide ranging and of interest to all sorts of folks. You'll have to decide for yourself if it makes sense for you.

It'll be cool if you can

It'll be cool if you can make it to Toronto, Patrick.
There are a mix of lessons on the table for both New and Advanced users, including one on how to build a community site with Drupal. Which sounds like something you're looking for.

Also, feel free to add comments on the DrupalCamp Toronto page on this site. Things are still being planned out and feedback on what participants would like to get out of the day will be very useful.

Strong Interest in Attending in NYC

rob johnston@lookbothways.com's picture

I wanted to express our interest in the Advanced Users camp in Brooklyn. We've both used Drupal and want to extend our expertise.

unfortunately, I have to work both Saturday and Sunday and I can't take any time off until sometime in June.

Sounds like a great oppurtunity, and it is practically in my neighborhood. Hopefully it will be such a success that we can get more Drupal events here in NYC?

Things to bring to camp

MacRonin's picture

Hello Drupalites,

I hope to be there both days. Do we have a specific room number/name instead of just second floor?

The website mentioned a few things that we should try and bring like: Laptop, power cords, power-strip, extension cord and open minds with lots of questions. I was wondering about one other thing. Do they have wireless? or should I bring my longest(30-40 feet) ethernet cable and stick a router on the end, so I can share?

Looking forward to the camp weekend and picking up all sorts of new ideas/tips. Especially looking forward to info on CiviCRM and maybe OrganicGroups, I'm hoping both can play an important role in an upcoming project.

Day 1 of DrupalCamp NY was a big success!

There were a ton of people there (we had to move to a bigger room)
and lots of good conversation, show and tell and training.
