2014-06-11 09:00 - 2014-06-15 18:00 Europe/Zurich
Event type:
Sprint

The status of Drupal 8 core and contrib is awesome. People start to bootstrap real projects!

You might ask soon: But how are we going to deal with layout in our bigger projects?
Say, i need a hub page containing some ordered / wrapped widgets...
It's not a view, placing blocks or trying to use fields is a bad match.
You can't believe this needs custom code in Drupal 8! What about Drupal 7 tools like Panels?

You get it, it's time for another massive Drupal 8 Contrib Sprint!
The sprint is not about porting monsters like Panels. It's about finding some minimalistic solution that allows us to efficiently rollout projects, with a long term replacement/migration path for Panels or whatever will rule the world. The project Block Page is one key candidate for a start.

Pack your bags and don't forget to sign up here:

Everyone is welcome; if you have built a site in Drupal, you can contribute. We will split into pairs and work on D8 Layout issues. Bring your laptop. If possible, install git before coming and git clone Drupal 8 core. For new folks: you can get a head start also by making an account on Drupal.org and taking a look at the Drupal Ladder http://drupalladder.org/

Please Note: We start on Wednesday and won't stop till Sunday!

MD Systems will sponsor snacks and Drinks throughout the sprint.
Do you (or your company) want to sponsor lunch or dinner for this sprint? Please let us know.

As a followup, we will also do a Media sprint: 2014-07-21..25

Looking forward to seeing you in Zurich.

Wow, already 19 people signed up for our Sprint - although many are bound by DrupalCon Austin. That's awesome!

Sign up and help us to fill the gap of the evaporated Drupal 8 Layout initiative!

See you soon. :-)

Getting started

miro_dietiker's picture

We just started with the sprint this morning.

We will open a call today at 17:30 CEST (UTC+02:00) to discuss the goals and the sprint status.

Sprint goals, from our blogpost (link above):

  • Push Page Manager forward by improving it and fixing remaining problems in Core
  • Start a new Widget project that will provide flexible blocks with an inner layout

Our official sprint IRC channel is #drupal-scotch. Be in touch with us!

Awesome

I have added some designs and user task flows to the document attached to the sprint spreadsheet here: http://bit.ly/SKjHwf

I will try to hop on IRC tonight at 1:00am EST (7:00am Zurich) if anyone is up at that hour. Otherwise I will be available on IRC from 8am (Zurich 2:pm) onward.

It's awesome that you are working on page manager. I was talking with Tim about it today and he clarified some points for me. By tomorrow I will have revised designs ready that better encompass the conditions and access rules.

The widget for flexible blocks sounds cool also but I'm concerned that there are other user needs that are much more pressing than that, particularly the layout chooser.

Our requirements

miro_dietiker's picture

tkoleary, with top priority (and that's why we initiated the sprint) we need to fulfill our minimum requirements of our customer project. These page manager requirements are very limited (such as one region only).

The widget, however, is a requirement for our project. We need to check how far we can get with abstraction within that widget (such as layout plugins, creating block instances per region) or if it will finally remain limited/hardcoded for the current variations for later generalization/improvements.

Most importantly, it's about setting the priorities right (on a daily basis) so we end up with something that works after the sprint, instead of having everything in progress.

Outcome/Accomplishments?

Hi,

Glad to hear about this recent sprint. Are the accomplishments from the sprint documented anywhere? Any sense of what the going forward plan is?

Thanks!

Ongoing sprinting, wrapup soon

The sprint was awesome and brought quite a bit of momentum back to the originating Layout initiative.

This week we are completing some of the sprint work and will provide a wrap up about the progress and current status.

A huge thank you to the sprinters that joined us.

Wrap up?

Hi,

I don't mean to be a pest, but I'm truly interested in where this is headed. Has a summary been posted somewhere?

Thanks!
