February: Drupal 7 Code Sprint

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

At the New Year's Test Sprint, theunraveller and I were talking about having another sprint - this time just for Drupal 7 stuff. (We were both agreeing that we like sprints because, as I see it, you learn so much more about programming by working with others on solving problems.)

This should happen in a month or so (early February) in order to be able to contribute to Drupal 7 before it's finished.

Ideas
*Perhaps if there's someone, local, who worked on part of Drupal 7, say, maybe the image module? (HINT HINT eojthebrave!) - perhaps that person might have some projects that require some volunteers.

*Make little groups: documentation, testing, patch reviews, minor bug fixes (We should check the Drupal 7 timeline to see where they will be at)

Timing
* not on a saturday afternoon, since so many active drupallers volunteer for free geek - so maybe a sunday afternoon Feb 7th? Noon - 5pm

If folks are interested, let us know.

I'm very interested in this, and I think it should be sooner rather than later since the Drupal team plans on releasing an alpha this week. I'd be up for having the code sprint on Jan 24th or 31st, if other people are game.

It would be great to give people exposure to the process of helping out. I am sure anyone could help with documentation and other items that don't even require code writing.

Feb 7th is probably a bad day because there will be a lot of parties that day - I think there is also a sporting event that day.

Jan 24 is fine...

(wondering why there are a lot of parties on feb 7) (google says super bowl)

The 24th or 31st are also fine with me.

Sounds like fun. I could also

Sounds like fun. I could also do either the 24th or 31st.

oh but where?

the other day i ran into theunraveller on the train, and we talked about how we would like to do this at common roots, in their common room.

this is the form one fills out to reserve the room:
http://www.commonrootscafe.com/ourcommunity.htm

which is busy on weekend days. :(

it would be nice to come up with a few more places that fit 10-20 people, as meeting at different times and places allows for a variety of people to be able to attend events.

So - we can either find somewhere else, or choose a time/date where we could use that room.

Thoughts?

Any movement on this? The

Any movement on this? The 24th is coming up soon. Should we plan on making it the 31st? I don't have any suggestions for a good place to do it, but can ask around.

how about this...

what if...

we set it for the 31st and tentatively plan to meet at common roots at noon, but limit the event to 8 people - then we can just grab two tables.

it isn't ideal, but i don't think we would really have that many people.

and perhaps we should make another discussion thread of different places that work for meeting in the TC.

That sounds nice to me.

That sounds nice to me. Chach, did you contact CR? Was the meeting room not open?

somewhere on this thread i posted a link to common roots. i called them and they said that we have to sign up w/ the online form/calendar. however, the calendar shows that sat/sun are 'busy' between 10-6 -- so we can't sign up then.

little update

chachasikes's picture

so we will still meet at common roots jan 31 at noon. i'll start an event signup for the sprint.

BUT - I have good news. We brainstormed at lunch and now have three whole new ideas of places to meet (in the future) -- the MLPS library has a room that can be reserved. Open Book has some meeting rooms. also we could look into west bank social center. i'll contact all three places and find out more details make a new thread.

... Is always interested in helping to facilitate these types of gatherings and dedicated to helping the local community thrive. Since we're running a lot of events for a lot of local groups, it helps if we can keep a weekend event down to 1 or so per month. Like most folks, we also have a lot of other stuff going on during the weekends!

I totally understand the eagerness to jump on board with D7 development, but there will always a need for work and participation! I'm a little concerned that scheduling too many gigs in a row will result in organizers pooping out so that it becomes unsustainable to keep things going when help is needed the most.

To that end, we can make a weekend day available in February here (like, say, the 21st). Of course, this offer absolutely doesn't preclude meeting up anywhere else at any other time!

I little known meeting place: Lunds and Byerlys have common rooms available for free as long as meeting does not charge admission. They can be reserved a few weeks in advance. The ones I have been in can easily hold 10 - 15 people.
I know of these locations:
Lunds Uptown
Lunds Edina
St Louis Park Byerlys

I just started this thread about which places are good for Drupal meetings.

I'll add some of the other places that I know people like to use. Hopefully this will help local organizers to find different kinds of places.
