One thing I'm interested in is integrating crypto tokens into a Drupal "user rewards" system. If you're familiar with the site/podcast "Let's Talk Bitcoin" they've developed their own user rewards token called LTBCoin. At the moment, I think it's based on CounterParty.
LTB seems to have open-sourced their CMS code which is PHP-based.
The LTB platform seems to reward users for reading posts, commenting, logging-in etc. I wonder if it would be possible to do the same with Drupal.
Just at the "ideation" point now, but what do others think about this?

Anything is possible. This
Anything is possible. This https://www.drupal.org/project/userpoints might have some code in it that could be useful toward establishing core user actions and rewards. Associating the "points" with coin might be a way to go after you get the basic actions configured. You may also look at https://www.drupal.org/project/coin though there doesn't appear to be any movement there recently.
It's a good idea!
yea its a good idea to do a drupal type of coin. I've messed with coloredcoin and counterparty and NXT so far. The NXT system by far out does every coin out there that I have seen.
The drupal association should setup a Drupal coin called an Asset on the NXT network. And those that want to support Drupal can purchase "tokens or shares" of drupal and help it grow in that manner. I really think it can work out. Currently its the only "decentralized stock market" out right now. Counter party and coloredcoin is centralized since it resides on a central server at the moment as of 9/15/2014.
Here are some examples of whats listed so far: https://trade.secureae.com/#15641806960898178066
I can forsee this happening eventually as it gives way to fund open source projects on a global scale without borders.
I've noticed that the NXT is very similar to how Drupal is where it can do many things with an active developer community working under one platform.
If anyone wants to test out NXT you can get the direct source from here: https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/downloads
If you want some nxt to play with you can get it from this faucet: http://nxtra.org/faucet/
I think if you are gamifying
I think if you are gamifying participation, it doesn't make sense to allow people to trade their points. People could buy in and pretend they were participating.
Reddit's crypto rewards - for Drupal too?
Along these same lines, note that Reddit, after a recent funding round, will use some of that funding to "back" a user-rewards crypto currency :

Dries, in a recent blog post, mentioned that he wants to have more of a bounty/rewards based Drupal ecosystem :

im sure we can implement a
im sure we can implement a clever way to increase drupal participation somehow by linking some type of points/token system. say for every post/commit/reply/thumbs up you get drupal points that can be used towards something of value in the ecosystem.
a good example is "LTBcoin", its backed by the radio show "lets talk bitcoin". They issue LTBcoin to anyone that contributes and creates content for the show or website. And these LTBcoins can be used to purchase advertising spots on the show at a discount. They can also be traded between people as its "backed" by the show's advertising space/time.
Drupal can take a similar approach. maybe give the ability to advertise at drupalcons/website/etc. That's just one example as I'm sure we can come up with more creative solutions.
@jbrown -- yea thats true, the drupalcoins should be somehow separate from the participation aspect of things where someone cant just come in and buy a bunch and say they helped out the community.
One major thing that can happen is if freelancers gave a discount for workd done for "drupalcoins", this in effect would give the coins a value aside from being able to use it in the ecosystem for advertising or what not.
Right now if anyone wants to test the idea, they can use one of these 2 platforms at the moment: www.secureae.com & www.counterwallet.co
I prefer SecureAE as hits built on top of the NXT system which is showing great promise in their platform aside from all the trolling it gets.
As for the counterwallet, its another solution which is somewhat linked to btc, but they also have their own currency on top of the platform like nxt. they are a centralized service as they can only be accessed from their website at the moment.
This needs further discussion and education for those with the power to make this happen.
Tokenly for Drupal
I'd very much like to see a form of Tokenly (that worked with Userpoints) created for Drupal. If anyone is up for funding this, please be in touch, I'm available to build a module that will support this functionality. Perhaps we could set up a Bitcoin croudfunding campaign to establish this.
Tokenly - ZapChain
Hi Darrell,
By "Tokenly", do you mean Tokenly from "Let's Talk Bitcoin" (Adam B Levine) :
https://github.com/tokenly
I'm pretty busy now, but I could contribute to a crowdfund for some kind of "user rewards".
Personally, I'd only be interested in a D8 version of such functionality.
I think there are several big companies (ex. Cisco) that use Drupal for "self-serve support" :
https://www.acquia.com/blog/acquia-and-drupal-helped-save-cisco-400-mill...
Compensating contributors and moderators in something "real" I would think would go a long way to improving quality. I'd think these kind of firms would be a good source of funding.
Have you seen ZapChain.com? They seem to be putting this concept of "bits for content & moderation" into practice :
