Meeting highlights

Nice to see everyone including some new faces!

Some quick points we touched on:

  1. Drupal 8: We spent a good deal of the meetup running through site builder features in Drupal 8. Using http://simplytest.me/project/drupal we spun up a D8 beta3 instance to have a quick play. So many highlights, but there's a nice overview at https://www.drupal.org/drupal-8.0 which covers most of what we touched on.
  2. Arthur mentioned he needed some color module integration to allow a theme to switch out colours based on the current node being loaded. Looks like hook_process_page() altering the colours based on a field attached to the node could be a good place to start https://www.drupal.org/node/108459
  3. Arthur also brought up https://www.drupal.org/project/fieldblock which is a nice lightweight alternative to panels or display suite to easily alter the layout of a node.
  4. Heather mentioned how much she loves https://www.drupal.org/project/nodeblock which is a nice stable D7 solutions for allowing end users to create blocks.
  5. Discussion around panels/ds/views+theming brought us to point where we're looking to do a deep dive comparison between the solutions for early next year.
  6. Jann also brought up why isn't webform using standard fields, which requires a long answer which I hope to go into more details on with a presentation early next year.
  7. Which brings us to next month where earlier in the month were going to do our Christmas bash in the Currumbin RSL where we can have a Fat Yak on tap and discuss the 2014 that was and look forward to Drupal 8 and beyond in 2015. More on this soon.

Look forward to next months Christmas get together, see everyone there!
