We hope you can join us for the first 2015 meeting of the Spokane Day-Time Drupal Learning and Co-Working Group!

When
Thursday, January 15, 2015, 10 AM to noon
Sign up!
Log in and click the "Sign up" button, if you think you will be coming. You will be reminded the day before. The meeting will be canceled if not enough people sign up by the end of the day the Monday before the meeting. You can always click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come.
Where
Spokane County Library - Argonne branch, 4322 N. Argonne Road, Millwood. We meet in the large meeting room - enter from the door out in the hallway before you go into the area with the books
What
Learning and "co-working" time - bring your laptop, or watch on the projector screen. Come with a project you're working on, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), a question about Drupal you would like to get an answer to, or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!

Note: If you'd like to have a meeting at another time that is more convenient for you, please feel free to organize it! See http://groups.drupal.org/node/161584 for a Wiki where people have listed when would be convenient for them to have meetings.

Sign up now! Log in and click the "Sign up" button if you plan to come, or probably will come, to ensure the meeting actually takes place. The meeting will be canceled if not enough people sign up by the end of the day the Monday before the meeting.

Meeting notes

Here's what we talked about at today's meeting:

  • When will Drupal 8 be out? Answer: When all the critical issues are fixed.
    https://www.drupal.org/project/issues/drupal?status=Open&priorities=400&...
  • Is Drupal 8 usable yet to build a web site? Maybe... Has bugs, and Shawn says that contrib modules like Media aren't ready yet. There may also be usability problems. Jennifer encourages everyone to try Drupal 8 on http://simplytest.me and if you find problems or usability difficulties, file issues at https://www.drupal.org/node/add/project-issue/drupal
  • Drupal vs. WordPress:

Jennifer says: WordPress is not good for using as a web application framework because there is too much work being done in the theme (figuring out what to display as well as how to display it). Drupal separates this better: the modules determine what to display and the theme determines the markup and CSS (how to display it). So WordPress is great to use to build a content-rich site with pages and/or a news/blog component, but if you want to have other functionality, you may be better off with Drupal.

Some companies use WordPress for the front end and a custom system for the back end.

  • Announcements:

http://pnwdrupalsummit.org -- Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit - in October in Seattle -- be there!

There is also going to be a Linux Fest in Spokane in May at Spokane Falls Community College. May 9, 9-4. Shawn would like to help (give a talk, staff a booth). Jose could make a banner. Diane could maybe talk about CSS. Jennifer may be out of town.

    DrupalCon Los Angeles -- https://losangeles2015.drupalcon.org -- May 11-15

  • https://gratipay.com/ - a place to donate to Drupal volunteers (and other people and organizations)
  • Mobile: So much of traffic is mobile now. It will increase your traffic to make a mobile-friendly site (says Jon). Explore options for hierarchical navigation menus, like swiping vs. clicking a + sign to expand hierarchy (need to make it obvious what the UI is!).
  • Panels module - brief intro https://www.drupal.org/project/panels
