Brewpal is coming up!

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

User group meeting

We're almost through the first month of the year, but don't forget about Brewpal next Tuesday!

It's an informal gathering where we get together with our laptops and work together on whatever we want. Spice it up with some good food, tasty beverages and great conversation. In the past we met at Lucky Lab, but this month Metal Toad has invited the group to their new offices at 522 SW 5th Ave Suite 400.

So come on downtown next Tuesday at 5 (or when you can make it)!

Is this move being considered

jhedstrom's picture

Is this move being considered as a permanent one? If so, I have some concerns that may have been overlooked during discussions of the move.

  • Brewpal in the context of the Lucky Lab provides an informality that I know many attendees find more approachable than the formal meetups in an office space.
  • Since it is at a public space, I've seen people from other communities that didn't even know about Brewpal become friends and members of the Portland Drupal community. I've even seen several contracting gigs formed this way over the years at Brewpal.
  • Summer sun beers on the patio.

Agreed!

I agree with Jonathan.

The purpose of Brewpal is different from the meet-ups. It's supposed to be casual and accessible. A location like Lucky Lab is also more family-friendly. There's room for the kiddos to stretch out. And, perhaps most importantly, there's a real menu. People can eat and write code, or socialize.

If there's an interest in other firms getting an opportunity to host the meet-ups, that seems like a very reasonable topic to discuss. I know that the meet-ups in Denver, for example, rotate shops. This allows the community to get a better sense for how different teams work, what their spaces look like, etc. It also varies the commuting distances, and seems to lead to more of a mixing up of the faces that you see at these events.

I'd guess that I'd ask, why the change?

Thanks for bringing this up

Thanks for bringing this up Jonathan.

In fact, I don't believe that there has been any formal discussion of a permanent move for BrewPal. There have been, however, several informal thoughts shared in IRC and in person at various meet-ups. I think the general consensus is that a lot of folks are keen on the idea of a "roving" location for BrewPal. Although the Lucky Lab is a great space (and has a great patio), there are a lot of great places around town that would be good locations. And I know some folks who may not regularly make it might appreciate it if Brewpal came to their proverbial backyard every once in awhile.

Some considerations for possible Brewpal locations:

  • Lots of space, and a nice patio during warmer months
  • Public Wi-Fi
  • Good menu, for both food and drink
  • Family friendly
  • Dog friendly is a bonus!
  • (Edit) Bar service (rather than table service) is a plus, to keep everyone's tab separate

The move to Metal Toad this month should not be considered a permanent change, but rather just testing the waters for one of several rotating venues, and it could end up being one of the more popular ones.

Hey everybody! Let us know what you think. Most importantly, show up next Tuesday and hang out!

Let's use this comment thread

Let's use this comment thread as a place to put suggestions for Brewpal venues. When we gather a good list, I'll create a Poll and we can choose February's venue.

Sound good?

I'm definitely in favor of

I'm definitely in favor of rotating destinations; variety is good. I'd just argue that we need the amenities we currently have with the Lab, and we need to keep it informal so peeps are comfy.

I nominate Green Dragon They

I nominate Green Dragon

They have free wi-fi, their facebook page says "good for kids", they have a patio, over 50 beers on tap, lots of space and food...

February Brewpal is a month away... perhaps a SE edition is in order?

For what it's worth, I like

For what it's worth, I like Sean's suggestion of rotating the user group meetup around different shops as a way to foster participation, showcase the diversity of Drupal shops in Portland, and keep things interesting. For brewpal, though, a public place seems more open, welcoming to new members, and gives our community more visibility in town. Crossing to the east side opens up many good options. Green Dragon is great, and so is the SE location of good & trusty Lucky Lab.

Hopworks on Williams

It's "way out East", but shares some of the LL's bennies:

  • Kids play area
  • Indoor/outdoor seating
  • Interwebs
  • Good food and beer

location

I do like the SE Lucky lab, I think anything more centrally located than the far-flung NW Lab would be nice.

Punchbowl Social might be another possibility, they have a little bit of everything.

Roving meetup would be fun too. I don't have a strong opinion on whether company offices should be in the rotation.

One advantage of the Lucky

jhedstrom's picture

One advantage of the Lucky Lab (any location) is that everybody covers their own tab. When we used to do Bridgeport after the normal DUG, folks who stuck around the longest usually got stuck with covering more than their fair share.

SE Lucky Lab

Another vote for SE Lucky Lab. It's central(ish) and close to many bus lines + you can easily walk there from many downtown shops.

SE Lucky Lab ++

I also like the idea of the rotating location.

Can someone more familiar

jessehs's picture

Can someone more familiar with http://eclipticbrewing.com on the south end of Mississippi speak to whether it may be a good location?

Also, if we're going to the East side, perhaps someplace a little outside in South West would be good to include. (Although I was born and raised East side and have no clue where to go...)

Ecliptic Brewing is AMAZING!

Ecliptic Brewing is AMAZING! You should definitely check it out. They have some good outdoor seating during the summer, but I don't know if they have a good indoor space for larger groups.

Ecliptic

I just had a group event at Ecliptic last week. They have lots of room in their restaurant section for groups. It can easily accommodate 20-30 people, with plenty of space to spare for other patrons. The waitress suggested that they could save a block of tables for a group if you call them first. Good beer too.
