Coffee & Drupal in San Antonio

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Event type:
User group meeting

Come introduce yourself and meet other Drupalars over coffee! Make new friends and grow your network. Stay for just a few minutes or hours. Share work leads or discuss thoughts on the D7 alpha. That's what meet ups are all about! It's always comforting to know we're not alone, so come share the Drupal love.

I'm new to the San Antonio area and would like to get to know some local Drupalites. For a town as big as San Antonio there must be dozens of Drupal ninjas out there. Let's help one another by utilizing this invaluable resource!

Updated Details

Just in case you don't want to scroll down to read, we're meeting this Saturday the 20th at 1:30. We're meeting at the Grace Cafe in the TriPoint YMCA, on St. Mary's Street at Mulberry and 281. Google Map.

San Antonio Drupal Users Group exists, honest!

Charlotte-Anne's picture

There are indeed a bunch of Drupal users in San Antonio, and we were even rewarded with our own official DUG. It would be wonderful if you would joint the SADUG and then broadcast this to all of us in the "South Austin" region. You will find some friendly folks who are right about at critical mass.
Jonathan Dale is the founder, and there are more than a dozen of us last I looked.
I can offer space with decent WiFi and a conference room at the S.A. Central Library, which is conveniently located near some very good coffee (the Java Hut) and super convenient to folks with youngsters who might tag along.
So come on over to the SA group and let's talk meetup!

I'm there

jessekanner's picture

I'm also new to SA.. and new to Drupal after years of Wordpress, Cake and other PHP frameworks. I've decided to take the plunge and try to go all Drupal this year!

How are we to be notified of the exact location? Check back here? Email list I can sign up for?

[edit]: nevermind... I see we get notified via email when items are posted here... [/edit]

Library sounds like a great

daniel sanchez's picture

Library sounds like a great place to meet. Second week in February would work for me. Do you guys think there is a need for a Drupal Basics meeting in SA?

-Daniel Sanchez

@Charlotte: The library

davidneedham's picture

@Charlotte: The library sounds perfect, thanks for volunteering the space!

@Jesse: Welcome to the awesome Drupal community! Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or to swap IM info. (david at davidneedham.net)

@Daniel: I think a Drupal Basics meeting would be a good idea. Once we meet we'll see what people are interested in and go from there. I'd really like to have a regular (monthly?) get together where we can discuss things and take turns leading short how-to sessions.

Down the road it'd be nice to have a publicly announced event to introduce the community to Drupal and teach what we can. It would probably help raise our numbers, our activity and who knows - it might even lead to some gigs.

I thought unrealnighthawk had suggested the 20th. The 20th is fine with me.

David, Welcome to SA and to the SADUG.

Glad to see some more activity and interest. After a few conversations with C-A it might be better to have this at the TriPoint Y ( http://www.trinitybaptist.org/tripoint ) as they have more reliable wifi and a very nice meeting room that we can likely use at no cost.

Having a regular meeting would be great. For a while we were going to Austin but we haven't made that trip in a while.

Hi fellow Drupalers! It's great that there's so much interest in the San Antonio area by Drupal users & enthusiasts!!!!

In an effort to cut down on email for which I have no interest in, I have a small request. Once y'all get going with the San Antonio group in the near future, please use that group as much as possible for all your San Antonio-related correspondence. I'm getting quite a few emails here on the Austin group from folks posting San Antonio-related info, and I'm sure many other Austin members are also receiving your San Antonio-related emails.

For your convenience, here's a link to the San Antonio group:
http://groups.drupal.org/san-antonio-texas

It's great to get the word out to as many folks as possible about the San Antonio group & I encourage any Austin group members that want to receive San Antonio's correspondence to go ahead and join the San Antonio group as well. In this manner, hopefully you won't miss out on any San Antonio events.

Again, it's great that there's a San Antonio group! Good luck with everything!

Best,
Walt

Walt, Thank you for that

davidneedham's picture

Walt,

Thank you for that information! FWIW, this is posted in the San Antonio group, but I also checked the boxes for "Audience" in the Central Texas and Austin groups to make sure I didn't miss anyone. I see that I am able to deselect those two other groups, so I will do that now and (hopefully) cut down on the posts irrelevant to you and I'm sure many others. Of course you're all still invited. :-)

Peace

David,

With your help, the San Antonio group will grow & succeed!

Thanks for your efforts in helping get that group going, a group whose presence in San Antonio is, IMO, long overdue.

Best,

Wow there are others !!!

I'm glad that we are doing something in San Antonio, much better than being Austin orphans. Count me in on 20 Feb. I have been tinkering with Drupal for a year now, I can't believe how far its come in one year. Cant wait to talk to some other Drupalers out there. Right now everyone I know thinks that PHP is a military acronym.

Yeah! Once you get past the

Yeah! Once you get past the initial learning curve it's amazing what you can do with Drupal. I look forward to talking on the 20th!

Meeting location for Feb. 20 meetup

Charlotte-Anne's picture

For our meetup at 1:30 on Feb. 20 (next Saturday afternoon), I've secured a room at the Grace Cafe, which is in the same building as the TriPoint YMCA, on St. Mary's Street at Mulberry and 281.
The meeting rooms there are lovely (and free), with a nice wide screen on the wall for projector action, and a full-wall whiteboard.
There's free WiFi that moves quite nicely, free parking and good coffee tea and snacks for sale at the Grace Cafe.
The facility is a project of Trinity Baptist Church.
I and Jonathan Dale have used the rooms regularly, and he's already having delusions of holding a San Antonio Drupal Camp there (hey, do you know how many Baptist Church Web sites are on Drupal? A lot!)

I try not to have delusions

darthclue's picture

I try not to have delusions but compared to the SA Library this place is awesome. For anyone who is wondering why we chose not to utilize the library, it takes on average 30 minutes before the wifi will accept a connection.

The wifi at Grace Cafe is instant, free, and awesome.

And since it appears that the link C-A posted got munged .. let's try this one : Google Map

thanks. see you there

Sounds great. I'll see everyone there. Looking forward to meeting some new Drupal folks.

Instant, free and awesome... what's not to like?

Missed it!

jessekanner's picture

Sorry to say I couldn't make the meet up last weekend. Family situation took over. Dang.

So how'd it go? Plans for another one maybe next month?

-j-

Yeah, we're meeting every month now!

davidneedham's picture

Sorry I forgot to post a follow up, but it went great! I made a new event for next month: http://groups.drupal.org/node/51683

Confirmation

jessekanner's picture

Sorry I fell off the radar since March. Whew, lots going on here.

Is the meeting still on for the 3rd Sat of the month (ie a week from tomorrow) for July? Still 1:30 at the Grace Coffee house?

Yes. The San Antonio Group

darthclue's picture

Yes. The San Antonio Group still meets the third Saturday unless something comes up. We'll be working with the Houston DUG on the 17th to help build a site for the Fort Bend County Women's Center. We plan to start setting up around 9 AM and working on things until around 4 PM.
