Dutch Cyclists

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We had a small BoF yesterday on the Dutch DrupalJam. The people there:
Stefan van Hooft
Gaele
Dominique van Gimst
MegaChriz
Bas Vredeling

Stefan summarised the findings of the Montepelliers BoF to us.
I made some quick notes in addition to those findings.

Because there is a Fiesta on september 24 hotel prices will skyrocket and will be booked in advance: http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/events/la-merce/barcelona-la-m...
Alternatives could be going to a camping place outside of Barcelona.

Cycling in groups seems troublesome in Spanish cities and in Spanish traffic specifically. We'd love some advice on this by the locals. What size of group is advisable?

We would like to know if there are local "borrow / rental bikes" available.

Finishing on the Barcelona beach together is great. But having 2 groups: a recreational and a challenge group, sounds like a good idea too.

I'd like to copy the Amazee Labs trip from last year with a couple of enthousiast cyclists from The Netherlands / Belgium and drive down to Cataluña with an escort van doing some cycling on the way there. For the occasion I plotted some example routes on Strava. These are seriously challenging and each require over 100km cycling with mountainous terrain. Please let me know if there are any other lunatics up for this.

Hi there, I'd love to do some

Hi there,

I'd love to do some intermediate/advanced cycling Friday, Saturday, Sunday. From my experience last year, I feel like riding with Bas will be both challenging and fun for my level (I'm only an occasional cycler but happy to do 100km+ rides for a few days).

I'd especially b interested in mountainous terrain and probably a more relaxed final day.

Do you think about renting bikes locally? Last year we were pretty well organised with a Van to transport all the bicycles for a group of ~10. As I won't have more than 3 days this year I would probably prefer borrowing/renting a bike locally. We could fly into Barcelona Thursday get the gears and drive out by train to start a small tour. That of course is just me thinking out loud :)

Greetings,
dasjo

Easy last day sounds great. I

Easy last day sounds great. I was really hoping to set up something like you guys last year. But without the drone :)

Renting a local bike is perhaps cheaper than shipping a bike. Would be nice if the local guys could help us out there. I just need a 58 / 60 frame with a short stem and a really forgiving cassette for going uphill. I'm like a brick sliding over sandpaper when riding uphill.

Who's your contact in Barcelona?

Hi I'm still trying to find a

Hi

I'm still trying to find a company here that can take care of renting bikes so cyclists can pick them up where they want to start (Girona maybe) and return them in Barcelona .

buying?

basvredeling's picture

How about buying a cheap old road racing bike locally from a site like ebay?

From my point of view is not

rodrigoaguilera's picture

From my point of view is not about how to get the bike but how to deliver it to the point where people want to start and forget about the bicycle once arrived in Barcelona.

Maybe is not such a bad idea to rent a van in Barcelona, rent the bikes there and bring them to the people.

Barcelona / Girona are both

basvredeling's picture

Barcelona / Girona are both pretty accessible by train, as are Calella / Blanes / Mataró. Is it easy to take a bicycle on the train?

Exactly, you can move by

rodrigoaguilera's picture

Exactly, you can move by train pretty easily. The bikes are not a problem in the train as long as there's not 10 in the same car. I've carried my bike in that trains many times.

Is it free to take the bike

Is it free to take the bike on the train?

Yes, there's no additional

Yes, there's no additional charge.
Girona - Barcelona is around 9€ one way. There's also high speed trains but they don't accept bikes there.
