Role-based interface

Shawn Conn's picture

Great post! Thanks for sharing.

Drupal is a great tool for doing anything with site management, but the flip side is it's completely overwhelming, especially to those seeing an unfettered admin menu, or worse, having to navigate through the labyrinth that sits underneath /admin.

One thing I like to do when it comes to making life easier for all stakeholders is to cull the interface only to the parts relevant for the role. I try to get a sense of all the roles of the site (e.g. writer, content administrator, advertising, etc.), ask people in that role how do they interactive with the site, then customize the experience for that role.

Creating custom dashboards with the revelant data to that role, judiciously setting permissions, using modules like Simplify, & a little custom code (where warranted) do much for making site administration pleasant for everyone.

Meeting tonight!
