Taxonomy remains in core in Drupal 8. Terms were made entities in Drupal 7, and provided with term reference fields for relating them to nodes through select list, checkboxes, or autocomplete (including with the option to create terms, also known as free tagging).
Over in contrib, Taxonomy Menu has already been completely ported to Drupal 8 (by nerdstein). Taxonomy Container has a beta, Field Delimiter has an alpha, and Tag Cloud, Taxonomy Edge, Suggested Terms, Taxonews, and others have dev branches.
But you won't hear much about taxonomy in Drupal 8, because as far as core is concerned, it's much the same as taxonomy in Drupal 7. Is taxonomy already perfect, or is it getting neglected?
