Best out-of-the-box theme and/or carousel for Drupal 8?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I am hoping to assist our UW Madison group with updating microscopy.wisc.edu and also loci.wisc.edu with a new theme. We use Drupal6 and are in the process of trying out migrations with Drupal7 and Drupal8 now. I really like the carousel on the Yale School of Management's website because it is integrated with the kind of web content I create daily: news, profiles, and speaker events so that when I would update something in the site it would appear on the front in a clean way. http://som.yale.edu/

The Yale site is Wordpress CMS, but is it too much to hope for an out-of-the-box theme and/or module that could make something like the Yale carousel that runs on Drupal8? We are looking into Zurb Foundation, but it doesn't seem to by quite 8 ready.

Hi Kristy, It looks like

Hi Kristy,

It looks like http://som.yale.edu/ uses Drupal 7 (http://builtwith.com/som.yale.edu). I'm guessing (at looking at the html source) that they are using https://www.drupal.org/project/bxslider for creating the slider. https://www.drupal.org/project/bxslider_views_slideshow for Views integration.

Zurb Foundation, the D8 theme has > 800 installs which is pretty good for the theme. You might have to dig into the code a bit, but that would be for any D8 theme/module at this point. The good old D7 vs D8 question.

Nate ftw!

That looks nice actually....

We use the nexus theme which has a slider built into the theme. We are on 7 now, but there is a dev version for 8.

Thanks Nate, that's really helpful. Yeah our two questions: 7 or 8? and theme? A little worried about the absence of panels in Drupal8, and it still looks like the Bx Slider and Views integration for that will be Drupal 7 too. I saw your notes on Zurb Foundation -- it looked nice and blocky and I liked the plugins available for it. I'm just wondering how long we would be waiting for the updates on the modules . . . The Yale carousel is unique and I like it as a model for academic sites because the most important content with this shortest expiration date is relayed very quickly across the three major categories: news posts, research profiles, and speakers/events. I am not a coder. It may be that our best bet is to go with Drupal 7 and then Zurb Foundation to build but I feel like I'm taking a shot in the dark.

Thanks

The D7 vs D8 question comes

The D7 vs D8 question comes down to your timeline to launch and how much coding/debugging you want to do (or $$$ if you can pay someone to help)? If you aren't launching for 6 months and have extra time to debug/patch modules, then D8 is a great option. It will have a longer shelf life until you need to upgrade again and lots of new features to make your life easier.

If you don't have the extra time for D8, Zurb Foundation is a great theme. I currently use the 7.x-5x branch in production for a couple of sites and I'm a big fan of it. Let me know if you get stuck using Zurb (if you decide to use it) and I can point you in the right direction.

D8 Theme

Thanks Nate. So our group was already leaning toward D8, and we have the time to wait for it. I was looking around for themes and stumbled on Zircon https://www.drupal.org/project/zircon as ready to go for D8, We were able to migrate it without a lot of stuff breaking, but wanted to put out a query to the UW group for D8 theme recommendations. It may be that by the time we are actually launching the site, any theme recommendations might be irrelevant by then -- I'm guessing Zurb Foundation will be D8 ready soon.
