Facebook Instant Articles module

vgardner's picture

Hi all,
I've been working on a Facebook Instant Articles module (initially started at The Economist) and I have a working version of it - https://www.drupal.org/sandbox/vgardner/2676800

The idea is to give any Drupal site builder the ability to export any content type into Facebook Instant Article's required format without any coding and simple configuration, using Drupal's standard interface.

For this, I've gone for the approach of providing a new View Mode to a content type where a user can map Drupal fields to Facebook Instant Article fields. There is then an endpoint which provides the RSS feed of nodes from the desired content type.

@simonengelhardt who works at Facebook has given some feedback on the module and some patches are already starting to come in from other contributors. It would be great to get some more feedback from this group, specially on which scenarios/use cases I might still need to cover, different approaches, possible integrations or just generally testing the module.

It's currently being reviewed and I'm hoping to get it released as a full project soon - https://www.drupal.org/node/2677004

Hey Vin,

We're also building a version of this at NBCUniversal, integrating some of the newer/upcoming features in Facebook Instant Articles with Drupal, ideally in the most flexible and lightest way possible.

As you know I have been working to coordinate with the several other orgs/devs including you so that we can hopefully centralize our efforts, avoid "Druplication", and help everyone benefit from collaboration if possible.

I've emailed all of the people I'm aware of who are working in this space - for now non-publicly, only because some of the new Instant Articles features are not public yet - we should be able to discuss them on this group soon.

But my main point of replying here now is that I'd like to talk with you, the Thunder devs (who wrote https://www.drupal.org/project/facebook_instant_articles so far), and with guidance from Simon (and at some point Moshe) about using one project namespace and perhaps different branches for versions that are architected with the upcoming Instant Articles features in mind. I've emailed you guys about that this morning, so let's clarify that there and follow up on this g.d.o group once the new features are publicly announced.
