User group meeting

This month's Portland Drupal User Group will take place at ThinkShout, located at 433 NW 4th Ave. Ste 100.

We have two great presentations lined up this month!

Our speakers this month are Jessica Tate, who will present on "Everything you wanted to know about images" and Lev Tsypin, who will talk about "Fundraising with Drupal."

The meetup will start at 6pm with some social/networking time with pizza and an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages, hosted by ThinkShout. Presentations will start at 6:30pm.

(This month we're trying something new: a "dry" meetup. Pints is an establishment around the corner if you want to grab a beer before or after the meetup, but there won't be beer at the DUG this time. This might not be something we continue, but it is something that we're trying for April.)

I hope to see you there!

I have not been able to make

I have not been able to make these meetups lately, and I can't make it tonight either, but I wanted to take a moment to appreciate your experiment running a dry meetup. Though the Portland meetups have always been comfortable for me I have occasionally felt it difficult to find a place in other Drupal settings which were more intensely focused on alcohol, and I'm happy to see some experimentation in decoupling the two.

Image tools & info

I mentioned a tool last night to automatically compress images based on dissimilarity. You can find that at: https://github.com/technopagan/cjpeg-dssim

Tobias Baldauf also has a tool that will adaptively compress JPGs based on the saliency (i.e. level of detail) in portions of the image. https://github.com/technopagan/adept-jpg-compressor The short explanation is that in any given photo, there are areas of high and low detail. This tool will highly compress low detail portions of an image (e.g. a wall, the sky, etc. in the background) while doing less compression on high detail areas (e.g. a face).

For more image compression and performance nerdery and advanced techniques, checkout one of his recent talks:
