Okay, so I've been away for a few months while I got some other things going in my life, and several people subscribed to this list. What I want to know is how many of you are actually in Las Vegas, and who's really interested in getting together, and is there a place, date & time where & when we can get together? It would be nice to turn this group into a place for Las Vegans interested in Drupal to meet, rather than just a place to post help wanted offers.

I am an actual Las Vegan!!!
I am an actual Las Vegan!!! (sounds vegetarian)
I've been watching this group for a while, waiting to see some actual human interaction going on. and finally something! I would love to meet up. my schedule is very flexible so any time after 4pm during the week works for me, and of course the weekends can work too.
I find Drupal to be a very interesting approach to web development. I have scratched the surface to its power and would love to delve deeper into its functionality and learn more about module development and theming, etc.
please let the group know if you are interested as well and would like to meet.
Yes, I'm interested
I wouldn't have posted otherwise. :^) My schedule is my own, but I do have work and family commitments that sometimes keep my tied up for days at a time. If I have enough advance notice, however, I can usually make the necessary arrangements.
Meeting
I'm in Las Vegas also. I'm doing work for a non-profit foundation based here. The foundation actually has meeting space we rent (it's an addiction treatment/recovery foundation) to NA and GA groups located at Sahara and Decatur. No beer obviously but they have free coffee ;) and I could probably arrange something for free since the CEO of the company is a Drupal fan and is the one really pushing to use Drupal.
We're running about 4 sites on 4.7, and 2 sites on 5.1. I'm working on getting another virtual server up with 8 commercial sites (along with osCommerce), and then I have a catalog of over 250 domains that I need to get funnelled to the sites also. I'm going to use Drupal taxonomy and some multi-site RSS feeds I've worked out to make everything work pretty seamlessly. I've done a little development work in Drupal thus far, such as customizing the events module, and I have a few years of professional PHP development under my belt. I also got Pro Drupal Development by John K. VanDyk and Matt Westgate which is required reading, I'd say. I've made several themes also. I'm not much of a designer, more of a programmer type, but I can hold my own..
I guess my main questions would be what is the purpose of a user's group and what would be our goals? We could pretty easily setup a group site and have a meeting. My principal goal would be to develop a few modules collaboratively, promote Drupal in the community, open the eyes of local businesses to the power of Drupal and in general support each other if we run into any stumbles.
We could offer a free Drupal install to qualified local groups, etc. For instance, the Las Vegas local music scene is in serious need of help (yourlocalscene.com sucks, as do the weeklys websites), I can think of a few other things also.
I don't know, I'll check this tomorrow and see if you guys reply before I ramble any further.
Regards,
Dave
My reply
Well, since nothing has really been done yet, that's kind of up in the air, and whomever gets involved can help decide that.
There's no need to setup a group site, that's what this group is for.
That all sounds fine to me, and I'm certainly for it (especially the collaboration part). :^)
Wow. You certainly have a lot of ideas and goals. I don't mind being a part of at least some of that, but I really don't have the free time to be devoting it to a lot of charity Drupal work. I've already got a few charity Drupal projects going that I don't really have time for, so I would be reluctant to sign up for more. Other people in the group could certainly do that, as long as that isn't made the primary focus of the group, nor anything resembling joining in the meetings. There will be others who don't have a clue about PHP or CSS that will want to hang out, rub elbows, learn more, etc.
I am in Vegas!
Over the last year, I've built two relatively complex sites with D4.7 and D5.1. I've learned a lot of lessons the hard way, but become more and more a Drupal fan with each day.
I am definitely interested in a local Drupal users group. My schedule is flexible, so I can make just about anything work. If needed, I can get us a relatively large conference room at the data center where I lease server space.
I like the idea of collaborating on a few modules. I have two that I've been working on .. a revised forum (Drupal's sucks) and an event calendar/scheduler. I'd be glad to through code into a community kitty. I have my own Collabnet/Subversion server, on which I can host source control for projects. And, I can donate server space as well if needed.
My goals would be as follows:
I know X about Drupal. You know Y. Let's get together and help one another learn.
Often, I find myself with more work than I can handle. So, it would be great to meet other skilled folks that I can trust to hire when needed.
As mentioned, I think it would be good to help spread the word about Drupal locally. It is a strong PHP CMS framework and the more local business knows about it, the better for them ... and us.
To be good Open Source citizens, it would be good to contribute modules back to the core or contribution communities. Working collaboratively can help us find the right project, catch bugs an individual might miss and so forth.
So, there are my thoughts! I am in Vegas ... extreme NW (Durango & 215). I work from home but am happy to drive in to the city for Drupal User Group meetings.

Meeting would be great
I'm all for a local Drupal meeting and like many of the ideas here.
I can get space around UNLV and vote for meeting somewhere central so we can get as many folks from across the valley there.
My next tinkering beyond implementations will likely be around making profiles do the CCK thing in a way that they retain their special status and get all the good juice from CCK.

So let's schedule the first meeting already!
I am on the road most of August, but my September is pretty wide open. Shall we set a date?
Where and when shall we meet?
This thread was showing such great momentum and progress, but died just when we were getting ready to finalize it. I don't have a place I can offer up to meet, so I'm kind of at the mercy of whom ever of you does have a place. Let's not drop the ball here. Where and when shall we meet?
Let's Go!
I am happy to host at my place. I have a conference room that seats 5-6 and a wireless connection. I am in the NW part of town 95N & Durango/215. Or, I could get us a room at a library that is more central. Or, we can pick a restaurant/bar to get to know one another over beers.
I am open to any of these plans ... or others.
Doug
I might be able to provide a venue
Hi gang,
Yep, Las Vegan here as well. I run with Drupal on a few sites. Tweaks and minor modifications are no problem for me, but I certainly wouldn't call myself an expert. Looking to take my skills to the next level, though, definitely. I work for a centrally located organization with some decent conference room space and wi-fi. Let me see what I can score for this group. If a venue is decided upon before I get the info I'd be happy to join in and meet anywhere in town. Weekends are tied up through mid-October, but generally I can make nearly any night/weekend time with enough lead time. More soon... :-)

meeting... let's put it together.
I'd be willing to host at my place as well if it would help. I really want to participate in this. I'm really new to Drupal but learn quickly and this would be a really good thing, I do believe, for everyone. I have a big table and chairs for like 14 people, incidentally. my email is purrin@binary.net - shoot me an email and maybe we can start making some plans and a list of things we want to talk about or whatever. If a couple of us meet once or twice and post on here it will probably get going from there, I'd think.
