Setting up a multi-city website using Mercury

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am planning on launching a multi-cty website that will cover 5 cities at first and then expand as time goes on.

Originally I had planned to run each city as a completely separate Drupal install, and possibly even on different servers completely. My thinking was splitting each city into a separate install might allow me to scale better since some cities may grow larger and more popular than others.

Now Im trying to think if that is the best route to take. After browsing around this group I am really interested to set my site up using Mercury on Amazon EC2 or Rackspace.

Has anyone setup a multi-city website before? If im expecting large traffic is it better to split them off in separate drupal/pressflow installs or keep them together but use multiple EC2 instances?

I guess its a matter of taste

I guess its a matter of taste but I would use an Aegir or Multi-Site setup, that way cities/sites can share the same codebase & be easier to maintain. Personally I would do it all on the same box and expand as need arises. If it gets real crazy intense you could start to spit off the DB, Cache, Solr, webserver etc into their own servers and then see about auto-scaling & load balancing your pool. Either way the multi-site or aegir method should save you a lot of time when it comes to the application level.

If anyone is available to
