August 2018 Meetup and future project

Hi all,

Thanks to all those who came yesterday - really enjoyed myself, and hope you all did too!
We discussed a variety of things and had a nice introduction to using GraphQL with Drupal 8 from Eli.

We also decided to crack on with a little project over coming meetup months. We're going to create a JSON API (https://www.drupal.org/project/jsonapi) powered Drupal 8 API and create various front-end applications to make use of the API. We'll demonstrate progress at the meetups and come up with new tasks.

We collectively came up with a lot of ideas for the API dataset/functionality and know that Tom will be making a small fortune from one of those ideas soon enough ;). However it struck Eli, Nath and me after the meetup that we should rebuild the popular http://fridayfilmclub.com application that recently completely broke and it doesn't seem like the owner is planning to fix (we got in touch via Twitter). The premise of the application is that every Friday at 3 a screenshot from a film is posted and users guess what it is, with the option to have 3 clues to help them, with points slowly decreasing. Here's a description of how it works from the old site:

• Each Friday at 3PM you will be sent an email and the clock will start clicking...
  When you click on the link within the email you will be taken to a screenshot of a film and you have approximately 5½ hours to submit your answer.
• The clock will drop 1 point per second and there are a maximum of 20,000 points available from the 3PM email being sent. The faster you answer, the higher your score.
• If you don’t recognise the screenshot you can request up to 3 clues. But use a clue or submit an incorrect answer and you’ll instantly drop 2,000 points.
• The game is divided up into Seasons of 12 weeks in length but you can join and play at any time.
• There’s an on-going leaderboard and prizes available for the winner of each Season along with rewards for fastest answer and consistency of play.

I think this concept will provide plenty of varied functionality and hopefully a lot that will show how contributed modules we'd use on a normal Drupal 8 site can be used in a headless Drupal build.

We've got the next meetup pencilled in for 20th September if that works for most of us and I'll put together a demonstration of JSON API, most likely using the Friday Film Club idea.
