Thanks for covering this topic, it's been something I've been wanting to dig into. Thought your video was well done! And yes, panels and panelizer do exist in D8. But after seeing that, I'm kind of excited to not use them any more. From the GUI perspective, does this feel smoother/less "clunky" than panels?

I do think that it is less clunky from my experience so far, mostly because there isn’t a lot of configuration and new workflow compares to how a non layout builder display is setup. Being in core really helps because it isn’t adding added layers of complexity like panels does. Then again, it’s still just core but in a different flow it still has any inherent problems that one might find with core.
So basically YMMV but I like it!
