Core Theme: element mockups

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The past week I've mainly been working on the several layout types the theme will support and styling several common Drupal elements.

For those who are interested, I've made a zip file containing all the layouts and styles I've made so far. These are jpg screenshots of mockups, I haven't included the psd's because the file would be too big.
Here it is: http://www.kvw.be/files/SoCCoreThemeKlaasv8full.zip

If you rather have a quick look I've attached three screenshots:
- Layout with two sidebars on the right and blocks in the footer
- Mockup of several Drupal elements: primary and secondary tabs, table, collapseable fieldset, warning, message and pager.
- Mockup of a node listing with a sticky node at the top

The current supported layouts are:
- left sidebar, right content
- left and right sidebar, content in center
- right sidebar, left content
- double right sidebar, left content
- three equal columns
- region under the header for the site's mission or a featured node
- large footer region divided in three columns

Next week I'll do some revisions on the layouts and start coding them, so the general theme is now pretty much final. I think the three equal column layout could use some work, but aside from that I think it's time to dive into the code :)

For some reason the last two

For some reason the last two screenshots weren't attached. I've reattached them now, the first one is the node listing, the second the layout with 2 right sidebars and the third has styles for several Drupal elements.

looking good..

Hi Instromaniac..

Looking forward to seeing the finished themes. Your design is very stylish and clean.

I like it, but I don't think

I like it, but I don't think the fancy wingding in the node divider works with the rest of the theme. The primary design is clean and round, and there is that one baroque element. A simple line is fine.

I also very much like the tables, though the sort header probably needs shading/design of some type. Otherwise, how do I know it is part of the table?

Thanks for the comments

Thanks for the comments everyone!

The theme is a bit based on late art-deco, hence the combination of clean modern elements and ornaments. I understand it may look a bit akward, so if more people don't like it it could/will go out :)

Couple of queries...again

alpritt's picture

Oh great, my previous message seems to have disappeared. I had two queries, but I can only remember one of them at the moment which is rather annoying.

So my query was to do with the site logo and title. At the moment it has 'Drupal' and the Druplicon in place, but what happens if the administrator wishes to customise this? Will the background grow to accommodate longer text, or will the user have to replace the whole image?

And I've just remembered my second query :) Currently you have messages and warnings appearing below the fold of the page. They could be easily missed here by anyone who does not scroll. I'd put them above the fold.

The ornaments vs. a simple line is obviously a matter of taste, and I'd prefer to see you make a judgement call on such things. Designing by consensus is not good. But if you want my opinion taking away this subtle 'baroque' design would destroy the character of the theme. Perhaps one reason why it may seem out of place is that the pattern design on the header and footer do not have enough contrast to be seen in all conditions. Right now it is a sunny day and my room is reasonably bright, and I cannot see that pattern. Keep it subtle like it is, but maybe up the contrast a touch.

You are doing a great job so far.

I agree. The status

I agree. The status messages belong at the top of the page, for better visibility.

looks good

This is getting to look better with the details being worked out then the previous more generic plans. I especially love the pager styles and the well thought-out sidebar styling.

Amazing....! Waiting for this.

Judging by the screenshots, this is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Please note that I'm mainly a music producer and pretty much a Drupal noob.

2 questions:
- Will Drupal 5 be supported as well? Does anybody know when there's gonna be a "public" version of the theme?
- For evaluation, I DL'ed the current dev snapshot and it seems to run on my (almost empty) Drupal 5 installation.
But on the screenshots, everything looks super "hi res" - aka: small - and stylish (the look I'm going for....) and the current dev snapshot really looks far from what I expected as far as screen resolution goes. It's probably my stupidity in the first place.... but am I doing something wrong? Or will there be option to set the resolution as the theme gets more configurable via Drupal theme backend?

This is by far the nicest theme I've seen for Drupal so far.... dying to try it out soon!
Great job, everybody!

Karsten, I'm glad you like

Karsten, I'm glad you like it :)

Currently I'm aiming for Drupal 6 support but Drupal 5 support should be absolutely possible. So I'll try to get a Drupal 5 version ready once this one is mature enough.

I'm not really sure what you mean by resolution. The images here are shots from in Photoshop, so it's not an exact representation of how it looks in reality.
Are you using Windows and perhaps a browser other than IE7? On OS X or Windows with IE7 fonts look way better due to anti-aliasing.
