To do keyword research follow the following steps:
- First, download the attached spreadsheet
- Navigate to the page that you are going to search engine optimize
- Open a new tab in your browser and visit the Google Adwords Keyword Tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
- Open the spreadsheet and record the URL of the page that you are working on in the spreadsheet
- While reviewing the page you are working on, pull out any keywords or phrases that appear to be search terms (typically 1-3 words and uses words like "how to", "what is" - this takes a bit of common sense).
- Take the keywords that you "pulled out" and place them in Google Adwords Keyword Tool
- Type in the spam catching code and press "Get Keywords Ideas"
- Select the drop down on the right and select the match type "exact"
- Sort the results using the Global Monthly Search Volume
- Pick 1 or 2 keywords that you think best represent the content of the page as well as have a decent amount of search volume
- Jot your findings down in an Excel spreadsheet - place the keywords under "Meta-Keywords" column
