I'm kind of new to "the cloud". I recently setup an AWS account after seeing the seminars/video form the "Do It With Drupal" event that took place in New Orleans.
My main interest is to be able to setup an Aegir. I had Aegir setup on a Dedicated server once before but it proved to be way too expensive. I have been able to find the Pantheon Mercury & The Aegir AMI's but I am lost as to what needs to be configures once you launch an instance...and how to do those configurations. If someone can either explain to me what to do, or point me in the right direction towards some documentation that will explain things. I will be very grateful.

I too have a dilemma regarding Aegir and Mercury and Acquiaa
Hello.
I too have a dilemma regarding Aegir, Mercury, Acquia Drupal, Pressflow.
So my dilemma is that: It is possible to have:
Ubuntu 9.04 + Nginx for reverse proxy + Zend Comunity Edition Server + PHP-FPM (from dotdeb) + Aegir (as hosting platform) + Acquia Drupal (with Pressflow module performance applied) + Boost + Memcached .
Is that possible?
I think that Varnish is too much for me. I want to use Nginx to easy Apache stress (and caching eventually), I want Zend Community Edition because page cache will be substituted by Boost and I will have server reporting and management. A dilemma is how to sunstitute the php from Zend with PHP-FPM from Dotdeb.
I don't understand if I can Mix Aegir with Acquia Drupal and with Pressflow like this: Use Aegir as a hosting platform, use Acquia Drupal as Drupal flower and apply Pressflow optimizations.
Please advise me. Or please tell me if what I want to achieve is realizable.
Regards,
Luigi Cristian Nica
Anything is possible!
But why not join in with everyone else in making the Mercury stack better? Did you try out the AMI? I've not had any trouble with Varnish or any of the Mercury stack & have been more than impressed with the precise intelligent choices made by the brilliant Pantheon team.
Also why would you use "Acquia Drupal (with Pressflow module performance applied)"? Why not just use Pressflow Drupal to begin with? Seems like much to do about nothing... isnt Aquia drupal only basic drupal with some extra modules added?
To the other poster above I wouldn't suggest using the Pantheon Aegir AMI (in its current state) since its not really a Mercury build its just a server with an older Aegir in it. I have setup Aegir in mercury and outlined a lot (but not all) of the steps here... http://groups.drupal.org/node/55393 WARNING a lot of stuff is still beta and in dev so its not perfect yet, but it does work for me. That said I think there will eventually be a Mercury build with Aegir included at some point.
Also be sure to check out the Pantheon Drupal group ... http://groups.drupal.org/pantheon
Cheers & good luck!
Joshua
Thank you
Thank you for your advices.
So I can go with Pressflow instead Acquia and install the modules myself no? I want to do multisite/multilanguage Drupal. And I saw that Acquia is already multilanguage, SEO and FURL.
My dream is to install Eucalyptus http://eucalyptus.com/ and on top of it Mercury + Aegir.
What Ubuntu do you recommend for this setup? 9.04 or 9.10?
Ah...and my biggest problem is the fact that I want this on my VPS, and not in the cloud.
Regards,
Luigi
Well it all depends on what
Well it all depends on what you need out of it I suppose, I think all of the modules in Aquia drupal are available to install and create your own mix.
As for Ubuntu I use 9.04 at the moment and probably wont switch again until lucid I did try out 9.10 for a bit and it was nice too... I couldn't say what the best choice might be for you or even that you have to use Ubuntu .. there are lots of linux flavors out there, I just happen to like debian/ubuntu.
Did you see these instructions the Pantheon folks created for hand constructing mercury? http://groups.drupal.org/node/25425 Im pretty sure you can run through that on a lot of the linux os's & mix it all up to your hearts desire.
Cheers!
