Hi all -
At the risk of stepping on some toes, I have been noticing that I am having a TON of posts come through my "unread" list through this group, that are really just local user group or camp notices. It tends to feel like slogging through spam, since they're not really of interest to anyone outside the given region.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this group was originally intended to be, but the few posts that have been more relevant to all local user group organizers have been great, so I don't want to leave the group just to avoid all the extraneous posts.
I'm wondering how others would feel about the suggestion not to cross post regular meetup/camp notices to this group anymore? If that seems to strict, that's fine, but it's been bugging me for a while, so I thought I'd bring it up.
Was great seeing a few of you last week!

I share the same sentiment -
I share the same sentiment - especially sine a lot of them is not even in English. I think this group should be used for what its name suggests - Information for Local User Group Organizers, not an advertising platform. I believe if you want to share how you planned your event then that's fine but otherwise its pretty annoying.
Agreed
I agree with Arianek and Frazras.
Since the group has such little content it is important to keep that content as relevant as possible.
I'll make the official request here that we no longer place cross posted Camp or Meeting notices here. I would also add that a UNIQUE post to this group about the event would be very nice.
Example:
1] make a post to YOUR group and neighboring groups about your event. We don't necessarily need all of the replies to your event post appearing in here. :-)
2] come over here and post something we can all learn from. Tell us something about how you found the venue for your event or how you built the website that promotes the event, or something about finding sponsors for the event, or how you got volunteers to help put on the event. Surely there is something about your event that you can tell us that will educate is.
What do you think of that?
I think by removing event posts and event-coordination posts from this group, we will see a dramatic drop in the posts that the previous two posters are referring to.
When it is all said and done, any one can post pretty much what they want. We're just asking for some sense of purpose in the group. :-)
Thank you all!

That sounds great - thanks
That sounds great - thanks Doug!
I agree - I'd be happy to hear more general info about any tips, successes, challenges anyone has with various events if they have things to share.
Glad Ariane brought this up
I've been meaning to make the same request here. I have gotten close to leaving the group a couple of times due to volume of posts about local events, particularly in Péru — good on 'em for being so active but I can't read the language and am unlikely to drop in on one of their meetups.
This group will be much more useful to me as a local group organizer if we implement the suggestions Doug makes above. Thanks guys!
Great seeing some of you in SF!
agreed, but...
I'm agreed but I don't think the language of the post should factor in particularly. This is a multilingual site and we should be welcoming to all languages. Just because English is the dominant language doesn't mean we are right to assume it's the "right" language for all posts/groups.

Excellent point.
Thanks for that point Gregg!
Looking back at the posts in this conversation I am proud to say that no one has exhibited any bias towards non-english posts. Rather it was the content of the posts that were called into question.
Regardless, I join Gregg in his point that we certainly welcome our non-english Drupalers.
I encourage you all to follow the link in Gregg's post. I particularly liked DevelCuy's statement where he said, "'I'm expecting that 2010 will be the year for explosion of Drupal communities in Asia, Latin America, etc, etc,"
That excites me tremendously!
ditto. i totally support
ditto. i totally support posts in other languages, as long as they're not just cross-linked meetup/camp posts. people can always google translate them if they want to! (once they know it's actually relevant content)
Gmail i8n
Language isnt the real issue, besides gmail translates them pretty good for me, and there is google translate if ever i feel the need to reply
On top of it
I just emailed Purusio and asked him not to cross-post MEETUPs to the this group.
I am also adding a note to the top of our group page.
I think we'll get this resolved painlessly and quickly.

Thanks Doug - I don't even
Thanks Doug - I don't even know why I waited so long to bring this up, now knowing it was driving others nuts. ;-) I imagine we'll get some residual updates showing up as old nodes get updated, but eventually they should die down!
Not actually
I have removed some of the cross posted camp and meetup posts from this group. That means we will not be notified of future replies.
:-)
I'm so sorry
Just demoted 33 nodes cross posted from Latin America (90% authored by me/Peru).
That said, I'm not an "spammer", I have asked before: http://groups.drupal.org/node/20411, but was not that good idea :)
My apologies

Thanks Fernando
Fernando,
Thanks for removing those. I don't think any one thought of it as spam. Certainly you guys are amazingly busy out there and were just using the group as a cross-post container!
I'm starting a new thread to help us understand what in the world you are doing to get so much going on out there!
