Improvements to comment/voting display

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I've just been talking with greggles on IRC after some changes I made to Vote Up Down module for g.d.o:
http://drupal.org/node/781546

He asked if I had any other suggested improvements, and this is the result (check the images) of one train of thought:

Benefits:
-Voting widget is visible at all stages of reading a comment (no need to scroll back to top of long comment to cast a vote)

-Vote count always visible

-Will allow for collapsing of content area for -n voted comments but would still show title and author and votecount

Other possible additions:
-Color coding based on votecount
-your input please :)

I think its good, I would

I think its good, I would argue removing the lines you created though. They are only adding extra visual clutter.

Also how do you handle, new? Which is a marker now placed at the right.

The new marker could be added

The line is there for the benefit of the scrolling examples, but that is minor and easy to try both ways and see what works best anyway.

The new marker could be added either in the title area or on the comment body, I'm happy to go with concensus on this

I think title area makes sense if we graduate to collapsed content area on -n negatively voted comments, but if we're only dimming comments then content area is fine.

Test with lines removed and

Test with lines removed and "new" text added
(I've also right floated the avatar so it will always be in same area of page regardless of comment indent)

Scrolled without lines (I personally don't like this)

Scrolled with drop shadow (haven't tested how possible this is to implement tho)

I like it, but a question

Looks like you are focused on comments. What about nodes? Same deal?

Also, with nodes, it feels like the points thing is not terrible useful to group owners without a view to take advantage of it. Is that something you are looking at as well or only formatting. If only formatting I can start a new thread on that.

For example we currently have a view that allows content type and taxonomy as arguments. That allows me to structure a group page with panels to show different types of posts. What would be awesome would be the ability for a view to accept an argument for example to sort the nodes in a view by points as well. For example "show all nodes of story type with the 'session proposal' term id in descending order of how many votes each session (node) received". Do let me know if this is totally off topic for you and I'll try a new thread.

I don't see any reason it

I don't see any reason it couldn't be applied to nodes as well, but I think starting with comments is easier at this stage.

The work I've done with vud comments makes the vote count available as part of each $comment array, could probably do similar for nodes

All those screenshots would be a great improvement. They look great.

I'll start working on this as

I'll start working on this as soon as I have access to the new theme code and/or it is on scratch (which I can't access at the moment).
