Thanks. Ilang araw ko ring pinaghirapan yan :). Ang inspiration? Siyempre ang cool weather sa Pinas :P

Hot na hot ngayon kaya dapat hot din ang Drupal!

Meetup Format

marcrobinsone's picture

Hi there, since we're still in the verge of waiting for people to formally sign-up, let me give an overview of meetup activities:

  • individual talks (15-30 minutes per speaker)
  • panel discussions (tandem question-and-answer)
  • technical demos -- also during recess / snack time (to save time)
  • sponsor / commercial plugs

We need speakers -- so please don't be shy to inform the group if you're interested to share something. For anonymous tips, visit this page.

Para sa mga pros, you know the drill... post your session proposals below.

From Listener, Now I want to be a sharer.

danreb's picture

Although it was impossible to tackle all things, knowledge needed forConverting Designs to Drupal themes in 30 minutes time slot, I want to share what i have already learned in the past 51 weeks that i played Drupal, just like what i said before.

To be specific, I will not go in depth about converting Graphic Comps to XHTML pages because time is limited but will cover the following:

  1. Converting static web pages to Drupal Themes (I will not use a base theme so other presenter can grab topic about this if they wish to).
  2. Required Files for Themes
  3. Info Files
  4. Page Template Variables
  5. Regions and Blocks
  6. Tools and Resources
  7. Some CSS tips

My topic is suitable for beginner to intermediate Drupal Themer

If this is a valid topic, then I want to be a sharer in this coming MEET UP. Shy but I'm doing this because I am celebrating my first birthday as a Drupal Users... hahaha ang bilis mag iisang taon na ako sa pag gamit ng Drupal!

Hi Drupal Community,

I'm John Arce, yet another new member here...
I decided to join this meet-up
because i want to communicate with other developers
and get tips and techniques from professional developers.

Cheers,
John

Kabayans,

I'm a drupal developer working for CNN doing http://www.cnngo.com. I was previously working with South China Morning Post here in Hong Kong and developed their "At your service" product (http://ays.scmp.com) for them. All are running Drupal.

Not confirmend yet if I will be in Philippines that time but I'm supposed to attend a wedding of a friend on the 23rd. I'd really love to drop by and meet other Filipino Drupal Developers.

Keep in touch.

Great, may summer meet-up! I was at DrupalCamp last December. Too bad I won't be in Manila for this event. But I have some friends I invited who are very interested. They are mostly beginners so kindly consider including beginner stuff in the program. :)

Have fun guys! Btw, very nice design Marcky.

Is anyone joining Google Summer of Code this year as student or mentor?

marcrobinsone's picture

Hi Guys,

I hope everyone had a blast at the stretch of the election period. Is it just me or does anyone else feel that it lacked a certain technological punch to it? Anyhow, I'm glad it's finally over since we can now focus back on track.

For this week, we will expose certain meet-up ingredients that we will need in order to make it a successful one. As always, this task requires group-feedback, since everything we do here will be graded by community-effort (and our ability to collaborate and work together).

Without more palabok, I'll start of with this ingredient in for Day T-09:

Session Proposals

brief explanation: Nominate a session topic that you want to see or wish to discuss. It may be:

  • individual talk (15-30 minutes per topic)
  • panel discussion (15-30 minutes per topic) //anyone present can answer.
  • technical demo (5-15 minutes per topic)

Let's start rollin'! Post your ideas by replying to this post now.

marcrobinsone's picture

I propose a 15-minute technical demo on how to efficiently develop using the very cool development platform called WebEnabled.

Highlights:

  • Creating a Drupal site (installation and all that) in seconds. Yes -- SECONDS.
  • Cloning a Drupal website in seconds.
  • Sharing a cloned Drupal site in seconds.
  • Downloading a contrib theme/module and enabling it (you know it by now... in seconds!)
  • Project Team-management using WebEnabled's People-to-App web interface

That's all of it. If you think WebEnabled's Drush UI and Shell Access is cool, then it's worth another session proposal.

Hello, world.

youmustrender's picture

I'm new to this community. This looks like great community!

I'm looking forward to the event!

Can we set up a video-cam to record the event? I don't think one can absorb anything in a span of 30 minutes that easily. If it can be allowed. Just an idea...

Life is not perfect and that makes it just perfect...

...

marcrobinsone's picture

as a matter of fact, we can.

Wala pa nga lang volunteer for audio/video handling (recording, editing, uploading).

The video I mentioned would

youmustrender's picture

The video I mentioned would be for our personal use though. Hindi ko alam na wala pa pala kayo audio/video handlers, so iniisip ko sana na pwede na lang makisawsaw sa footage nyo for future reference. Good luck with that!

Is this a free event? Is there any need for a registration fee? Just asking.

Having a reg fee would be normal IMO. But if it's free, it will be good nevertheless.

Life is not perfect and that makes it just perfect...

meetup ain't no fees

marcrobinsone's picture

Other stuff like technical workshops are paid events.

Meetups usually is a time for people to meet-n-greet, so we're not expecting any fees here. Basically we're donating our precious time to take our eyes from work so we can collaborate and enjoy the rest of the summer with our fellow Drupalists.

If you know of a food sponsor... that would be great tho!

:) atlast....

can't wait to attend on this event! im very much interested on what are the top/best drupal modules for beginners lyk mE. tnx! :)

Halo

I am a newbie here, please take good care of me XD

Hello All

mmirasol's picture

Hello Everyone,

I'm Mark Mirasol from ShoreCloud Corp in Bacolod. My friends and I would like to join this event too. We'll be going to Manila on Friday to find this venue and also look for a place to stay. Does anyone have any recommendations? Somewhere close to this venue would be ideal.

Thanks.

traveling to Manila?

marcrobinsone's picture

Wow, you're all planning to Manila for this meetup?

As far as hotels are concerned, here's a good page to visit:
http://www.alltravelspots.com/philippines/ortigas-hotels.html

I'm not the best person to ask tho since I'm a stranger when it comes to Ortigas.

If you ask me, I'd rather stay somewhere in Makati because I personally know that there are near-by places to visit and affordable flats to consider. Makati is 20-40 minutes from the airport (depending on traffic). It's also 20-30 minutes by taxi from Makati to Ortigas; 30-50 minutes by MRT. -- This is just me, only consider this if you have affinity for Makati City. I'll might either stay at Saint Illian's Inn in Makati -or- travel real early from Bulacan to Manila.

It's a Saturday, which hopefully is not that trafficky.

Newbie here.

DrupNub's picture

Interested to attend the event? Is it still available?

I was thinking...

youmustrender's picture

Can you approximate the time that the meet-up will adjourn?

Life is not perfect and that makes it just perfect...

required basic knowledge?

jhaycx's picture

what is the basic required knowledge so participants would be able to cope up with the discussion?
is it okay to invite a non-php programmer?

also, is it okay to attend even if you fail to sign up for this event?

thanks! ^_^

Wishing to Attend!

ksevilla's picture

Cheer up Guys! I'm very much interested on drupal, beginning to appreciate the power of drupal =)

marcrobinsone's picture

I just wish to inform everyone that the sign-up period has ended.

For your information, this is unexpectedly what promises to be the biggest Philippine Drupal meetup ever -- with thirty climbing to forty (and counting) confirmed sign-ups. Unfortunately the venue enforces a strict number of guests.

I understand that there are people wanting to participate who might have not signed up yet. If you are one of those, please don't panic:

  • We are requiring everyone to assure their attendance. If you're not really going to attend, give room to those who are but didn't get a chance to.
  • This is not our last meetup. In fact, the trend is inspiring us to do it again: via Webinars or a DrupalCamp perhaps noh?
  • Traveling from another island? You have our sympathy. Your boldness is admired. So let us know if your trip is a go and we'll reserve a slot for you.
  • We hope to put-up online streaming... hoping (Justin Bieber?) :P

For the benefit of those who personally emailed/contacted me, I'll get back to you regarding seat availability. For transparency, I'll post a copy of the sign-up sheet with the registration order / name of the attendees (unique real names are valid).

For now, it seems that we're going to recall free lunch for the first-30 and consider efficient alternatives, such as:

  • Option 1) Instead of free lunch: turn the budget into a hearty afternoon snack for everyone. Lunch time = we go out, eat and then come back.
  • Option 2) Get a good food sponsor to make lunching together a reality.
  • Option 3) Pre-buy food. Eat inside the Techbar.

We're officially jam-packed in epic proportions, so forgive this tiny issue. We are new to this figure, and I assure you that we'll improve on this in future events.

Without further ado, please send your feedback.

Truly,

Marc C

wish i could be accomodated

makol1023's picture

too bad i just got this info of this meetup when it's already full, i'll jus try to drop by and try my luck just in case i could still be accomodated, if not, then i'll join some other time, enjoy kayo, keep up the good work....

Venue: Meet the G2iX Techbar

marcrobinsone's picture

Head's up! For the new-comers, here's what the Techbar looks like:

Only local images are allowed.

Seating Options:

1) Bar seats are available just in front of the presentation area.
2) Sofas in the presentation area.
3) Carpeted space in the presentation area -- with pillows! My favorite spot.

The Lounge (Entrance 1)

Only local images are allowed.

  • for direct access, use the Techbar entrance (just left of the Lounge door). No need to push the buzzer or enter the Lounge door. Got it? ;)

More Photos of the G2iX office here.

What to bring... Marcky?

marcrobinsone's picture

Here's a checklist of what you can bring:

Laptop (wifi-enabled)

In case you want to follow our technical demos, or if you want to present something found on the internet... bring 'em! Just make sure that the battery is fully-charged. We don't want to zip too much venue electricity. Just in case you do, let's take turns in using the electric outlets (kindly).

Business Cards

This is a very good opportunity to network! What best way to showcase those wildy-designed call-cards eh? ATTENTION: We'll use your cards in drawing prize winners!

Identification Card

Just in case you need to validate you identity of course. We may never know if a shape-shifter from Planet-X is amongst us.

Presentation slides, videos, portfolios et. al.

We want your organization or company to be heard: Shameless plugs are welcome!

Foooooood!

Wanting to share your town's local specialty to other attendees? How about those yummy pastries you secretly made for this event? Come on... Surprise us!

Novelty items, (shirts, caps, keychains, cds)... Prizes

I know that this is meetup, but wouldn't it be nice to get independently-sponsored freebies too?

Upbeat attitude
Remember that we have folks coming from different regions, IT backgrounds, and even races. Let's keep it cool and engaging shall we? Time to strut that British accent too!

replacement/substitute attendee

jgg.newbie's picture

Hi guys,

Could I send someone else in my place, something came up and I need to attend to it tomorrow. So I was wondering if I could send someone else in my place.

Also, will you be distributing handouts or offering softcopies of the topics after? I guess this would be the closes I could get to attend this event.

Sayang, I was looking forward to this event!

Thanks and more power!

Best regards

..

marcrobinsone's picture

Hi June, there might not be too may hand-outs since we'll be focusing on live discussions at the meetup.

If you'll send a proxy, just make sure the he/she shares full interest in Drupal.

loloyd's picture

Congratulations, everyone, for holding another successful Drupal event for PHDrUG (Philippine Drupal Users Group). I agree that it is always addictive and enlightening. Special thanks to Marcky for doing all these amazing jobs at coordination, management, having the energy and, most importantly, sustaining the desire to keep the spirit of information sharing alive at the community level.

I've missed this one because I'm currently elsewhere and sort of busy at the moment. I'm always with you in the "highs" of PHDrUG community spirit though.

OK, so where are the pics and the vids?

Thanks, Chame!

loloyd's picture

Thank you very much, Miss Chamé. I can now see and rely on the usual gang of suspects. Of course, there's always Marcky and Adolf/danreb. But the coolest dude of the night must have been Jhef who has been sporting a new astigin look.

I can now see a PhDrUG beach party on the horizon. Thank you for sharing your pictures.

hair so soft & silky

marcrobinsone's picture

True that.

Hopefully we get to see the macho charisma in the forms of Loloy D -- fresh from Japan!

looking forward

calmher's picture

I was actually looking forward to meeting the legendary Loloy D ;D

Next stop: polls for next meet-up.

Thank you, I am humbled

loloyd's picture

But I think that's too much of a compliment - "legendary" (think How I Met Your Mother). I don't think I deserve that description. You may get disappointed upon me failing to live up to your expectations.

Now, Marcky is a different story and personality altogether. I'm always amazed and impressed at the energy and charisma this guy has in delivering open source initiatives. It would be very easy for me to treat him to several bouts of ice cream and coffee... provided that his lovely sister would always come along. ;-P

Nevertheless, I'm also looking forward to meet you, calmher, of course. You represent the best of both worlds, sufficient geekiness and extreme beauty - and that combination is deadly rare the world over. Anything else that I can say beyond that would make your husband uncomfortable hahaha.

danreb's picture

Looking forward into this....

Thanks for all the sponsors. None of this will be possible without u guys :D

Thanks to jhef for his module development and for his patient to show us how rocky the road is in creating a custom drupal module.

Thanks to danreb for his theming suggestion.

It was also nice meeting new people with the same interest.

Overall thanks to Marcky. You rock!!!

We should keep this going. ^__^

Hands down the event was awesome.

Jawsome!

Hi Everyone, Congrats Marcky

danielhonrade's picture

Hi Everyone,

Congrats Marcky sa tagumpay ng ating meet-up, very smooth except sa projector...hehehe. Tuloy ba yung once a month meet-up? Special thanks to Danreb for his detailed presentation, solid explanation! And I am also looking forward sa ating pinoy drupal website project, para marami tayong mai-share sa isat-isa. Thanks kay Jhef for his intro sa module development. Talagang kulang ang oras sa bawat meet-up dahil enjoy talaga lalo na sa food, :)
Siguro, we have to spend 1 hour for ice-breaker, marami kaseng shy magtanong....

Sana mai-raffle and isang g2ix cloud server, wish ko lang!

thanks again.

Nakakatuwa talaga!

danreb's picture

Naubos kasi yung baon kong english dun hahahaha!

Amazing di ba meron tayong 4 foreign visitors sa event na ito kung di ako nagkakamali kaya talagang kinabahan ako hahaha,
last December kasi sa DrupalCamp wala tayong foreign visitor di ba, and the PHDrug is growing really really fast, dumadami na ang Drupal Addict sa pinas hahaha!

Nagkakalat kasi si Marcky ng DRUPAL PILLS e hahahaha!

I remember when I first attend the Drupal event conducted by Marcky in Fort Bonifacio last year, bago pa lang ako sa community, wala pang 20 katao ang umattend duon e, pero ngayon pati mga kabayan nating Drupal Users from ILO-ILO nandun, may mga nanggaling pa talaga sa malayong lugar.

Nakakatuwa... DRUPAL ROCKS!

philippe.barthelemy@shorecloud.com's picture

First Thanks to Marcky for being such a great organizer of this event!
This event was with no doubt a great success and a great occasion to learn not only about Drupal but also about the passionate Drupal community in the Philippines.
Congratulation to all the presenters, you did a fantastic job at preparing and delivering so well these presentations during your precious free time!
ShoreCloud team was absolutely delighted to join this event and look forward to contribute more to develop the community.

We would be exited to contribute to the e-learning website, let us know what we could start working on...

On the behalf of ShoreCloud, thanks again for this great event and can't wait for the many more to come!

Congrats!

Cheers to everyone who attended the Summer meet-up, congrats to all of the speakers who did exert their efforts to supplement other people´s mind with Drupal. Hope there´s more meet-ups to come, I think it would be better to have meet-ups every month or at least two months gap, the reason is for us to be bonded more closer and to be well updated at-least with the new technologies not only in Drupal but in the open-source in general.

Congratulations again and may the GOD of Drupal bless us all : )

Guys, Need help please, any recommendations

nazareth's picture

Any recommendations will be highly appreciated,

We are looking for a hosting company that will cater our organization´s website. I have a list of hosting companies that still need to be consider.

  1. Host monster
  2. Just host
  3. Blue host

Is there any other hosting companies with good services that I not yet considered and listed above? Please help me out through suggestions so I can make an evaluation. Another thing is we will be using Postgre for its database.

Thanks, and more power for Drupal Community : )

drupalvaluehosting

calmher's picture

Hi nazareth,

I've been with DrupalValueHosting for about 2 years now and so far, i don't have any complaints. I have about 6 domains in one account and none that experiences medium or heavy amount of traffic.

You might want to check them out :)

-chamé

Kudos

calmher's picture

Cheers to everyone who made this meet-up possible! Thanks so much to our sponsors G2iX, shorecloud, and CaptainDrupal.

Marc, you 'da man'! To the presenters: danreb, daniel, and jheff - good job! Let's continue to make our community vibrant :)

By the way, I do want to learn from anyone who has documented a way to easily move Drupal sites (all files and database) between environments to facilitate a better work-flow between a test site and a live site; or in "Dev" terms: between a development environment and a production environment.

Does anyone have a best practice in maintaining separate systems for development and production?

Or maybe we can address this on our next meet-up? :)

Try Features

You might wanna try "Features" module to facilitate the transfer of features from a test site to a live site.

Will do! Experimenting with it right now :)

@chamé

nazareth's picture

Hi,

Thanks for the info, definitely "premium" : ) it offers much higher than what I´ve considered, well as long as the services are good it compensates : )

Ms. Chamé, do you have transactional systems with your sites that were hosted by DrupalValueHosting? What are those type of sites that you've hosted with them?

Ok, I will discuss this with the rest of the team for evaluation. Thanks again : )

By the way, you would be more cuter without those glasses, : )

websites and glasses

Hi Naz,

There's one website that has a shopping cart. It's an Art Gallery and it doesn't get a lot of hits too. The others are 3 personal sites, 1 non-profit, and 1 homeschool organization.

Thanks for the compliment. I enjoy hiding behind those glasses ;) hehe.

ok, thanks for the Info,

Ms. Chamé,
What was that (45 available) and (35 available) mean? Is that for accommodation? Does it limit their client?
