Join us at 6:30pm on November 29, 2007 at the Bryght office for the Vancouver League of Drupalers November meeting. This month's feature presentation: Sugar and Spice vs. Puppy Dog Tails - A Discussion on Gender and Technology with Lauren Bacon of Raised Eyebrow Web Studio. Lauren discusses expanding your audience by breaking down gender assumptions. As well as providing website examples focused on gender inclusiveness, she'll discuss her and her clients' experiences designing Drupal websites.
We'll also have our regular mini-case study segment and general Q&A on any and all things Drupal.
Date: Thursday November 29th, 6:30pm
Location: Bryght Offices, 1 Alexander Street, Suite 400 in Gastown. [Map]
For those who don't need to leave right away there's typically a more social discussion at a local pub afterwards.
Agenda
Sugar and Spice vs. Puppy Dog Tails - A Discussion on Gender and Technology
As designers and developers, we spend a lot of time thinking and talking about users: who they are, what they're seeking, and how to help them achieve their goals. But often our users belong to a markedly different demographic than we do. Gender is one of the major dividing lines: while 51% of the general population is female, the high-tech community is still mostly male. So how do we make sure our work -- and our community -- is inclusive of women as well as men?
Raised Eyebrow Web Studio's lead designer, Lauren Bacon, discusses expanding your audience by breaking down gender assumptions. As well as providing website examples focused on gender inclusiveness, she'll discuss her and her clients' experiences designing Drupal websites.
Lauren is Raised Eyebrow Web Studio's lead designer and has over ten years' experience in the web industry. She has spoken at South by Southwest on women in business and has co-authored a book with her business partner, Emira Mears, set for release in April, 2008.
Real World Mini-Case Study
A member of the Drupal community does a 10 to 15 minute overview of their site and how it was implemented.
Drupal Q&A
Bring your questions on anything related to Drupal from how to do something technical in PHP to what modules are needed to implement a feature you want.

Kid's Room
In recognition of people with families the Bryght conference room is available as a kids room. It is next to the presentation area and has glass walls so your kids will always be in sight. Drupal Q&A
I know it's a little late but a question for the Q&A and something I've been wanting to ask for a while now...
What are the suggested best practices for setting up a single Drupal site?
What are the suggest best practices for setting up multiple Drupal sites on the same server?
While these questions may seem pretty straightforward, it would be great if we could discuss issues like server structure, symlinking to allow ease of update, as well as where to put your contrib. modules that might be shared among sites, where to put your themes etc.

Q&A Never Answered - Anyone up for answering now!
I had posted the above to discuss at the meet up but we didn't have time, not that I was disappointed or anything, excellent talk by Lauren. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some good resources or can provide some insight into the following:

Women Who Tech
Hi
Just to follow up on the presentation, if they are not already aware, certain members of the audience might be interested in an upcoming conference:
The website also quotes a couple of statistics that Rik mentioned at the meeting:
Women account for 28% of the workforce in proprietary software.
[Source: FLOSSPOLS, 2004-2006]
2% of open source developers are women.
[Source: 2005 O'Reilly Open Source Convention]
Perhaps one explanation of these stats are that there are more types of work involving software besides strictly being a 'developer' - (eg. project specification, testing, documentation, training, marketing, etc).
But in any case, maybe the way the Drupal project could perhaps play its part in tackling the low numbers of women involved in open source projects is something that could be put on the agenda for the next DrupalCon conference....?
