What's a good book for Drupal?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hello all:

I'm thinking of ordering a Drupal book. So far my choices are:
*Practical Drupal: Evaluating and Using a Web Content Management System by Niall Mansfield
* Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites by David Mercer

Between the two, I'm more inclined with latter. I would like to ask if there would be a better reading material. I'm planning to have my sister in the States order it for me.

Basically, I just need to display swf flash files and get a WYSIWYG editor running. So far, the online documentation on them has not been helpful to me at all.

I also need to fast-track on CCK.

Any recommendation from the group will be highly considered.

Thanks, Jun D!

Wait for the next book with Drupal 6 & 7 on it.

Jun,

I'm afraid that CCK is not the center of attention of those books. It's more of "how Drupal works" and "Journey with Drupal" type of books.

  • If you want to delve into development, I suggest Pro Drupal Development by John VanDyk & Matt Westgate. The codes used in the book are also in this URL. Good book, however, I think it was made during the transition time from Drupal 4.7 to Drupal 5.x, so don't expect CCK, flash modules, and the like discussed on it. Localization, jQuery, Module Development, Theming like a Pro, Caching and other advanced CMS technologies were the goodies inside.

  • If you buy the book (2007) and then Drupal 6 comes out, there will be lots of changes in the "Drupal best practices". Buy this if you want to understand Drupal's roots, tips, and split ends.

  • I suggest that you download videocasts instead. In my case, I have 7gb of downloaded videos from the Drupal Dojo and other sources.

  • Or better yet, why don't we convince our Drupal PH community to have weekly sessions with different intensive topics kahit may fee to cover the venue & other expenses? It's worth investing. Fun and enjoyable pa. ;)

There u go. Whether you buy books, watch videos or hack it yourself, I hope your love for Drupal gets stronger. Remember that Drupal is there NOT TO control you. Drive Drupal the way you want it.

Pro Drupal is a good book. It explains how Drupal works under the hood.

I agree with Marc's comments... but by the time the book on Drupal 6 or 7 comes out, it will be outdated because the next version.

That's how quick open source is... it kinda reminds me of Red Hat having an enterprise version, once the enterprises have fully tested a release, a new release comes out.

The only way you can become a master of Drupal is if you submit modules and patches to the community. Pro Drupal will lead you to that direction. Once you get a copy of it, Drupal 6 would already be out, but you need to start somewhere.

If you want a fast track on CCK, I suggest that you use Contemplate with CCK...

Hello all:

I really need a reference material that provides a step-by-step approach to get modules running. Yung tipong "Drupal modules for dummy's", or something like that.

At this point, I just need to get modules up and running, and how to use them. I've installed FCK editor, Image, SWFTools, and have not got any of them running...

Thanks, Jun D!
