Use link to create post

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

  1. I have a story I want to share on my site.
  2. It is located on another site.

So, is there a way to use the link to create a post, much like one shares on facebook?

For those not familiar, you insert a link and a post is automatically created with title (linked to original website), teaser, and image if available.

I looked around for a module but did not see one.

Thanks!

You would need to write a module that parses the source of the linked page and intelligently figures out what is the title of the page and what is the content, etc.

Would not be an easy task. I haven't seen any Drupal modules that do anything like that.

Something like this?

FBSL does look like what I envisioned. I will give it a try. Thanks!

Beware of copyright issues too

You might also need to consider copyright issues as well. I.e., the content you are including this way might be have an author that cares about copyright (e.g a newspaper, magazine, or Disney). If you're using only a small part of the story (e.g less than 10%), you are probably OK under fair use laws... but if your teaser contains a majority of the story then you might be liable.

Probably not a problem with private sites and 90% of the content you want to use, but if it's a commercial site then you should check with the Powers That Be before opening up your company (and your job) to law suites.

FWIW, I think Facebook can do this because it has a statement in it's terms about users taking responsibility for obtaining/having the right to post things. So, Facebook isn't liable for damages, just for removing copyrighted material on request. However, if a employee of Facebook did it, that would be a different issue.

That said, if the story you're quoting is supplied via an RSS feed, you might be able to use the Aggregator module to do what you want (and legally, since they are supplying the content via RSS...)

Sigh, I remember the days when knowing HTML and Image tools were all webmasters had to care about... long gone now.
