I am looking for people who either know about or are interesting in Drupal for a Palestine Drupal meetup.

Potential topics:

  • What is Drupal?
  • How can you use Drupal to serve your web content needs?
  • What can a Content Management System do for you?
  • Can you use Drupal in Arabic?
  • Can you build multi-lingual websites in Drupal?
  • Integrating Drupal with other systems.

Feel free to add your own suggestions.

Would love to help

Samir--

This is a great idea and I am eager to help. I have been using Drupal for 5 years now, and currently live in Ramallah.

I am in the process of putting together a decent install profile for Drupal in Arabic, and would welcome help with it in any capacity.

I'd be happy to do some teaching, presenting, mentoring or anything else to help build the community here.

Let me know what you think are good next steps!

Best,
Tim

Where/how?

Zorga Lina's picture

Thanks Samir for starting this discussion. I am in the US, in CA..would a beginner's class project be a useful thing? Do you know candidates/students who can participate, and how will they access the 'class'?
Tim, i would like to help with the 'install' profile, though my Arabic is 'book learned' (fosha) but then, this will be a written document, saheh? So I would like to help you with that..

Regards,

Potential locations

If the first meeting is more of a meet and greet then I don't particularly think it matters where we meet.

I'm in the Bethlehem area but depending on where people are located I can make a trip to Ramallah.

If we are having a meeting that requires reliable internet then we'd have to find someone to donate resources, like a professional organization or a student group at a University.

Most meetups don't really require much in terms of bandwidth and wireless access should be sufficient.

Samir, Tim - I believe that 3.* versions skype allows 10 people (including host) conferences. Skype is free, so it is possible to use for a meeting, I know that Skype also has a video component, if that matters. If > 10 people, maybe a couple sessions could work.

What OS are you on? Windows of some kind, Linux? If you need help to install Skype I can help out, you probably know it, it's opensource and works very well in my experience.

Hi All-- Glad to see there's

Hi All--

Glad to see there's some interest here. I am currently in the US (renewing my visa), but I plan on returning June 7 or thereabouts. As for meetup location, I have a car and am able to travel, so I defer to others who might have more constraints than I. That said, if Ramallah is convenient, I can look into getting a space that has wireless internet. I agree that Skype is also a good option if we can't find a good physical location.

Best,
Tim

p.s.: OS? EasyPeasy Ubuntu and Mac OS 10.6

Question

Hiba Awaysa's picture

Hello Developers;
I'm Hiba from Nablus, and I'm fresh in using Drupal
well... I'm joining a Drupal course just to build my graduation project as MIS student at An-najah University-Nablus

Actually, I'm more than interested in learning Drupal but I have some critical questions

If I want to build a system ... hum u can say it's a system that is concerned of managerial issues like archieving, organizing, registration, ... etc using Oracle developer 10g... so oracle uses sql plus as a Database container

the second part is customer services using a website that will be build using Drupal which use mysql as a Database container

so my question is: how can we integrate oracle system with drupal website by getting data from one resource

Example: a customer goes to this organization and start to fill his personal information and get some services from this organization, when he returned to his home, he opened his account on the web by getting his ID number and initial password from the employee who helped him in registration .... so we need 1 database to read and write from..... is their any solution for this problem????

Thank you Samir for your initiatives :D

Hello, This is Alaa Ayyad

alaa.ayyad's picture

Hello,
This is Alaa Ayyad writing from my personal account, i'm the same guy in upper post [moseco].

Anyways, you may want to learn more about 'Data Presentation' in Drupal, as i said above ... the video tutorials i have can be shared with anybody interested.

In your case i recommend the title 'Lynda.com - Drupal 6 Online Presentation of Data', read more:
http://www.lynda.com/home/displaycourse.aspx?lpk2=754
This tutorial features nice methods to view and manage data from databases to fields, menus, and table in Drupal nodes. It also introduces the use of CCK and Views to achieve more efficient presentation of data.

Other important titles:

http://store.lullabot.com/products/learning-views
http://www.lynda.com/home/displaycoursenotabs.aspx?lpk2=620&lpk67=true

If you or anybody related to you can drop by Moseco HQ office ... i can arrange these DVDs for him. Address is mentioned in my post above.

regards
Alaa Ayyad

Many Thanks :D

Drupal in Arabic

Hiba Awaysa's picture

Dear all;
I'm learning Drupal in English, but I'd like to ask if there we can implement the website for an organization in both Arabic and English languages?!?!.

The second question, according to your experience in Drupal which based on PHP:
I have read many articles of how to implement both Oracle application with Drupal website, and I found that there is possibility to let Drupal read from Oracle database but it's for Drupal 4.7 :S, there is also a module for connecting Oracle with Drupal for drupal 6 which is my prefered version to build the website, but also there is many possible errors, which means working under uncertainity, later on I found that there is a build in function in PHP which connect PHP with Oracle, so what do you think?!?!?!

Many thanks for your responses to all of you guys :D :D

Hiba Awaysa

hello, i'll answer first

alaa.ayyad's picture

hello,

i'll answer first question for now.

  • make sure Locale and Language modules are enabled.
  • go to 'Languages' from admin/settings and add the Arabic language.
  • go to admin/settings/language/configure and choose 'Path prefix only' then save.
  • go to blocks, add language switcher block to site header.

now you have: ability to switch between AR and EN automatically, and new extension for each path (www.site.com/ar/node/1) for (www.site.com/node/1)
