User group meeting

Hey everyone,

Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (June 9) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.

The theme for the June meeting will be "Communicating with Your Users" and the main presentation will feature Lev Tsypin, a Portland developer who maintains the popular Mailchimp module (http://drupal.org/project/mailchimp). The module allows you to send bulk-emails to your users by integrating with the excellent third-party Mailchimp service (http://www.mailchimp.com).

Lev's presentation will be useful not only to those interested in using the Mailchimp service, but also to developers who need to write modules that interact with third-party APIs.

Some of the topics Lev will be covering include:

  • Benefits/challenges of developing a "wrapper" module that interacts with Mailchimp's own API
  • Benefits/challenges of upgrading the module to Drupal 7
  • One-way vs. Two-way integration: Pushing data to Mailchimp and/or pulling data from Mailchimp

We're also looking for some shorter "lightning talk" style presentations on other modules or approaches that you've used to communicate with your users. This could be technical information or code, or a broader discussion of best practices you've discovered for sending e-mail, text messages, or the like.

If you're interested in delivering a lightning talk, please post a comment below so that I can plan out available time. I'll likely be delivering one myself on either the Private Message module (http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg) or the IM module (http://drupal.org/project/im).

And of course, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, June 9
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks!)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

See you there,
Ben

Bulk Private Messages Demo

Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight! I'll also be doing a quick demonstration of the new bulk sending features in the Private Message module. Now that you can send Private Messages to a role (in a scalable way), it opens up all sorts of group communication possibilities...

I keep wanting to show off

I keep wanting to show off more of the cool features in Drupal 7 but it's such a broad subject that it might work well as a series of short lightning talks over the next few months. I could start tonight with a 5-10 minute settling into Drupal 7 and the changes to the administration section if there's time for it.

I think next month might be a

I think next month might be a good time to go over more of the cool features in Drupal 7; I'm giving a short talk on the coder upgrade module, which ties in nicely with what's new in Drupal 7 from a development standpoint.

BTW I'll be able to make it

BTW I'll be able to make it tonight! We pushed back our trip due to the crappy weather. Gotta love the wet and the cold summer we're off to :).

Drupal 7 - 10 minutes tonight

BenK's picture

Hey Mike,

I've put you down for 10 minutes on Drupal 7 "cool features" tonight... then we can continue with more at future meetings. What would be great is if you could tackle one very specific area of D7 and then we can expand to other areas in subsequent meetins in a logical flow.

See you tonight!

Great you can make it, Jon...

Jon,

Great that you can make it tonight... see you then.

P.S. Will be terrific to have your Coder Upgrade demo in July!

Drupal 7

I'm also available next month and can present on Drupal 7. My new book - Beginning Drupal 7 started shipping on May 31st and I'm working on Pro Drupal Development 3rd edition (Drupal 7 version) and hope to have it out in August (Apress still hasn't changed the author information). If there's a specific D7 topic that I can cover let me know. Writing Pro for Drupal 7 has been an eye opener on all the changes coming with D7 - and there are A TON of changes.

post-DUG wiki notes

The timing for this presentation is perfect for me and I really want to be there... but I'm not feeling great and will most likely miss the DUG tonight. Since myself and eliza411 most often sets up the post-DUG wiki with notes, and neither of us will be there, could I please ask that someone take notes and post them in a wiki post after the DUG?
