The most important factor in this decision is that we want DrupalMU to work out-of-the-box. If we force users to download an external package and install it before they can use the wysiwyg, this is a huge blow for user-friendliness. On the other hand we do want to offer users some way to have a wysiwyg and if this is the only solution, so be it. Other options would be to continue the search of out-of-the-box wysiwygs or to write one ourselves...

Really, while it'd be ideal to have WYSIWYG "just work", I don't see this a deal-stopper that we require a third-party library be downloaded and installed. Even though Drupal has gotten easier to install, it still requires some technical skill to install. I think for now we just have to assume that an installer of DrupalMU will have at least enough skills to download and place in the right directory a third-party library.
FCKEditor is nice, plus the IMCE module makes it much easier to upload and embed pictures.
IMCE only works with fckeditor or tinymce. Of those two, I preferred fckeditor. [update: oh I see now bueditor and others work with it too, I'll try them out]
I also use a few other filters such as interwiki, freelinking, and video_filter in combination with fckeditor.

3rd party libraries not a big deal

maybe we should just include it
Thanks for your input Mathews. Perhaps we should just include it? Here's Dries' reply:
I believe in this case there's a very good reason for it to be mirrored. I notice that TinyMCE is under LGPL, I'm not sure if that's fully compatible.
BUEditor
Have you also considered BUEditor?
As mentioned in
As mentioned in http://groups.drupal.org/node/7529 BUEditor is one of the two favorites currently, next to nicEdit.
