I realise this may well be me doing something stupid. I have attempted to isntall Aegir several times in the past and have failed. I have now come back to give it another go but find I am still having issues.
I have CentOS 5.4 set-up with a working webserver, mysql, etc.
I have attempted to follow the specific instrustions at:

The install goes fine, almost. I get the messages (see reply below). I assume this is an issue with mysql, but I can't see what. I ahve the mysql db set-up, user's set-up with privalleges specified, I have double checked passwords, tried vatious users, but nothing. It always fails at this point. I have tried entering the root details, the aegir user details and the aegir root details here but get the same issue.
I would apreciate any pointers?

The 0.4alpha8 release had a HINTS_Centos.txt file that mistakenly links to a bleeding edge 'HEAD' version of the install.sh script
Use this script instead
I'm not sure if it'll fix your issues, but you've probably run up against some issue with CentOS and the bleeding edge development version of Aegir that's being worked on. Hopefully it works for you with 0.4alpha8

Thanks for that, will have a look. I did manage to get it to work on my test server. I found that I couldn't execute the entire script from an SSH session, I had to go and run it from the machine itself, which is not possible on the amchine I want to put it on.
So will ahve a play with the real script in the morning.

Did this new install script work? I had issues installing on my centos 5.4 machine too.
