Your question doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you're gonna run Aegir on linode, then why would your local hard drive matter at all?
But no, you don't need another hard drive to run a virtual linux instance of you wanna test Aegir out.
And if neither of those answers your question, please restate it.

It doesnt make sense because I have been confused on what to do. lol. you mean i can just run aegir on linode and no need to add anything else? I had a vague idea thats how it works, but my understanding is very hazy. thanks for responding.

I'm on Linode as well. Got Aegir up and running in no time. You'll have to figure out how to run all the commands through the command line but with mig5's screencast this pretty much helps you get up and running.
It's also worth considering boning up on the basic Debian system administration tasks. This will help you with basic maintenance as well as some optimization later on. I was quite happy to get APC configured correctly which did offer good improvements.
